Fire As She Bears! 2nd Edition (2.1)
by Brian W. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 05/23/2006 00:00:00

I had the first edition, so I decided to update to this one. While I don't use it as a system, I would recommend it to AOS players.

LIKED: The octagon movement system is intriguing. The idea of firing doctrine is a good one, and I do like the rating of flag officers system.

DISLIKED: The PDF is a bit disorganized; I didn't like having to print the examples separately from the main rule book. 1"=80 yards is a little bothersome for me, as I prefer AOS games in the same scale as my 1/1200 scale miniatures. That is a personal preference though, and I don't fault Mr. Fry for doing it that way.

QUALITY: Very Good

VALUE: Satisfied
Battle of Trafalgar Scenario Pack
by Brian W. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 05/23/2006 00:00:00

Excellent scenario pack. Although written with the FASB 3-inch octagon rules in mind, it is easy to convert to other systems. The rules to play as a hex-based boardgame are OK, but not useful in my case. All in all, a very nice effort and I would like to see some other scenario packs from this company. I am certainly awaiting their 1805 naval board game!

LIKED: Nice to have scenarios other than Trafalgar alone in the package. I actually bought the pack as a guide to Calder's Action.

DISLIKED: A couple of minor quibbles about the counters, but not significant since I would use miniatures anyway.

QUALITY: Very Good

VALUE: Very Satisfied
Hoist Signals Aloft!
by Brian W. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 12/21/2005 00:00:00

A good simple system for adding signals to any of your tactical-level Age of Sail rules. Well thought out, and flexible too.

LIKED: Adaptability across rules systems. Good counters, especially the ones that have the color listed under the flag. The method of handling who you are signalling (van, center, rear, all) is quite simple.

QUALITY: Excellent

VALUE: Very Satisfied
Fire As She Bears! 2nd Edition (2.1)
by Steve L. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 11/14/2005 00:00:00

An excellent set of rules for fleet/squadron sized actions. The rules are well illustrated with clear diagrams and examples. Unlike other rules for this period they do not focus too much on individual ships - but there is enough detail to fight single ship actions if that is your thing. These rules place you firmly in the Admiral's berth and you don't actually have to know an awful lot about sailing to follow them, unlike some other similar sets of rules.

Recommended for beginners and veterans of Napoleonic Naval Warfare.

LIKED: Easy to follow rules, enough detail for fleet and single ship actions, well illustrated and concise. The excel programme for ship design is a nice touch.

DISLIKED: The examples being seperate from the main rules.

QUALITY: Excellent

VALUE: Very Satisfied
Fire As She Bears! 2nd Edition (2.1)
by Gilbert O. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 11/15/2004 00:00:00

Excellent set of fleet action rules for the Age of Sail. I like the fact it places the players in the role of squadron admirals, not ship captains. The games can go relatively quick, depending on the number of ships on each side, versus some rules which put you in the role as ship captain. I found that learning and using historical squadron manuevering and command is the key to victory in this set of rules. The abstraction of ship to ship combat is about right for this level of play. Overall, I highly recommend for those wanting to play in the role of an admiral, not a ship captain.

LIKED: Rules were easy to learn. The focus on fleet actions.

DISLIKED: Didn't really care for the fact that the examples were a separate file from the main rules. I don't like having to flip from the rules to the examples. I would have preferred to have the examples embedded with the rules. But that is a personal opinion.

QUALITY: Excellent

VALUE: Very Satisfied
