Great map! Made for a perfect VTT map for my friends and myself on our adventure. Great encounter! Can be printed out and used with paper and pencil too.

Dwarven Outpost - Dungeon Map
by Joshua B. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 10/02/2011 00:23:35

Dwarven Outpost has all of the featured that a DM looks for in a digital map product. In addition to the standard .jpg maps (both with and without grid, and in color and black and white), it also contains conveniently sliced-up versions in PDF format for easy printing at home, should you not want to brave the print shop. The included Maptool formatted files (both .cmpgn and .rpmap) should make it easy to load it up in in the VTT. It also includes all the objects and map layer in seperate image formats, should you want to easily port it to another VTT.

The art is interesting and detailed. While the map itself is somewhat plain, the objects are beautifully drawn with appealing, bright colors, and would be worth the purchase price of the pack alone. The additional accoutrements, dwarven-themed border, sketch of the entrance, and labeling, all contribute to the ambiance of high-quality and artistry. This is, so far, my favorite map by Fantasy Maps, and I recommend it without hesitation.

If you're running a campaign and need a dwarven stronghold carved out of the rock, this is the perfect map for the occasion.

I would rate this dungeon map below average compared to all other maps in existence. It is an average sized dungeon with a fairly simple layout with few distinguishing features. Perhaps it is a bit sparsely furnished but this might be beneficial depending on the DM's requirements. However it is free and better than most of the other free stuff out there, hence my score.

I like the fact that you can have 3 layers on one single sheet, liked the colors and the overall quality, but I too think that secret doors should not be marked where the players can actually see them before their characters do.

The technical quality of the map is high, but it requires modification by the GM in that every version of the map includes the secret doors clearly marked in red.

In fact, instead of chopping up the entire map in pages, it might be more helpful to chop it up by which areas are accessible, or even room-by-room. As your adventurers explore, they may not have the entire map, but just the room they see; they open a door, the GM lays down a page or two with the new room, they find and open a secret door, the GM lays down a page with the room behind it, etc. I've used this technique with canned adventures before (scan the map, scale it, chop it up, and print it room-by-room), and it has worked quite well.

It's a pretty good, simply laid out unpopulated map set. The only thing that would have worked better for me is a third single page B&W map where the outside of the of the actual map was white or had a only an edge of grayscale.

Not without value, but I wouldn't recommend using as-is.

A third of the rooms are behind secret doors? In the middle of a hall? Who would find that?

Deadly Sands
by Joshua B. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 08/11/2011 22:45:09

Deadly Sands, the third release from Fantasy Maps, is another 40 in. x 32 in., expansive and open battlefield, this time in a desert theme. As with the other releases, there is a very painterly effect that provides good mood and ambiance. The dunes and shadows produce a very nice parched, dry, hot, and bright effect, well suited to the environment. Trees and stones offer a little bit of cover, but otherwise it is wide-open. This particular release is relatively generic. Granted, this is a desert, so one should not expect much in the way of anything but sand dunes, but part of me wishes there were a little more going on. This is a a good thing insofar as it is reusable, but a minus for anyone looking for particularly interesting or unique obstacles/terrain. It still easily earns four stars from me though, as it is a great staple to have in your GM's arsenal for a generic desert encounter that does not require any specific landmarks or points of interest.

As with the others, this map comes in multiple formats including color, black and white, with grid and without, and split up over multiple pages in a PDF file for easy home printing.

Fallen Statues
by Joshua B. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 08/10/2011 18:40:22

Fallen Statues is another 40 in. x 32 in. map from Fantasy Maps, and this one features a bright green plane with some interesting ruins dotting the landscape, with a cross intersection running through the middle and stretching off in the four cardinal directions. The ruins have a very Aztec/Mayan feel that provide a good motif and a lot of character. As with other 'Fantasy Map' products, this map has a very painterly style rather than the straight-edge computer-generated look favored by some other publishers. This is the map's strength, though, and makes it stand out in a sea of same-y products. Fantasy Maps has so far done a great job of filling the gap for artistic, moody atmospheres.

This map is done in perspective style, rather than parallel-projection overhead which most other maps use. This means that it looks like it is from a single perspective/viewpoint suspended over the map. This contributes to the ambiance and provides a very nice 3d look in exchange for the traditional benefits of a strictly 'top-down' look: Pillars and walls and statues towards the edge of the map occlude the spaces 'behind' them. So, if a character is standing behind a pillar, you will actually have to place the token on top of the pillar art. This is not a big deal, but it might bother some players who want it to be obvious that their characters are behind, rather than on top of, a pillar or wall.

Like the other products, the map comes in just about any format you could want, color, black and white, with or without grid, and with PDF files of the map 'sliced up' onto multiple A4 or Letter pages for easy home printing. This should make it easy to use no matter what format you need.

All in all this is another great release that should find its home with anyone who is running a campaign with central-american style ruins or shaman characters. I recommend it highly.

Old Swamp
by Joshua B. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 08/10/2011 05:14:24

'Old Swamp' is a 32 in. x 40 in. map featuring a moist bog full of plant-life and small bodies of water, decorated with a few touches of 'dungeon dressing'--a fallen tree, an animal skeleton, a dirt path. The branching path winds its way across the map making it a good site for a random encounter between two points. The rich, dark colors set a good 'damp' mood and I would describe the art style as 'painterly' or even slightly impressionistic. If you like maps that provide mood and ambiance then you'll like this. If you prefer maps with razor-sharp edges done in CG style, you might look elsewhere.

You get just about every format you could want: color, black and white, with grid and without, and A4 and US Letter formatted PDFs with the image sliced-up over many pages (twenty pages for the letter) for easy printing. Keep in mind, however, that the art is rendered in deep, dark colors so it may cost a lot of ink if you decide to go the home-printing route; given the size and rich color it is probably best suited for printing at a print-shop or using it in your favorite VTT.

It is worth noting that it would be pretty easy to print or use only portions of this map (say, a quarter of it) if you wanted a smaller battlefield or would like to split it up over different gaming sessions for more 'unique' material. The border and compass might make this slightly less practical, but it could still be done with minimal fuss. I would have preferred the map to come without the compass and border, or perhaps include a version without them--say if you needed the path to be running north and south rather than east and west, but this is really a minor quibble.

All in all, this is a solid map that is generic enough to lend itself well to reuse. If you need a nice open battlefield in a swamp motif, this looks like your best option.
