This game is exactly what I was looking for! My wife and I are HUGE fans of the Borderlands video game franchise, and I have started collecting/converting miniatures and making terrain to simulate a tabletop miniature version of the game. Well low and behold, I was browsing around wargame vault on day and stumbled upon this awesome game! (seriously though, The Outland Chronicles is straight-up Borlderlands the miniatures game, which is amazing) Most of the mechanics are pretty standard, straight forward, and easy to learn. You don't get bogged down with too many different game mechanics that are overly "innovative" or "outside-the-box". There are also plenty of illustrations and examples throughout the rules, which are really helpful. What makes this game the most different from other sci-fi/post-apoc skirmish game engines is the r.i.s.e. activation/reaction system, which is fun and engaging mechanic that opens up a lot of strategic options and decision points. It's not just a tacked on reaction system, but an integral mechanic that keeps both players involved the entire time. There are lots of possible actions models can take, and lots of different weapon and special effect options, but the core mechanics are simple enought that is doesn't bog down the rules and become too overwhelming.
Another great surprise (especially given the ridiculously low price of the pdf) was the amount of good "fluff", which is something that sometimes gets brushed over by many generic indie rule sets. The authors give enough background and world information to give the game a great feel, or flavor, but not so much that is just gets boring. Being a small indie production, and only costing me a few dollars, I was also actually surprised at how nice the book looks. Don't get me wrong, it's just a nice word document with some pictures, and there are some typos, but for only costing a couple bucks it's not bad. The authors have also made some videos explaining the basics of the game (the video quality isn't great, but they're still really helpful). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tu7oxB5RO4U This is something a lot of bigger publishers don't even do a good job of.
What made this game really stand out to me was the campaign system and the various scenarios included in the book. I'm a huge fan of Mordheim/Necromunda, and the scenario/campaign system fits that same vibe exactly.
The book and videos do have some language... but you could just put some white-out over the bad words if it really bothers you.
Not perfect, but for the insanely cheap price there is no reason why anyone reading this shouldn't just buy the pdf. Easy but engaging mechanics, plenty of fun special rules and attributes, great scenarios and campaign system.
