The Morane L, also called the 'Parasol' for the single wing over the crew, was a French-designed general-purpose military aircraft that saw wide use during the early years of World War One. Powered by a rotary engine, and carrying two crew in tandem (usually), the Type L had the distinction of being one of the first aircraft to be armed to fight other aircraft.

The Type L was pre-war design, and in its early form used an 80 hp engine and wing-warping for lateral control. The Morane L's were used for reconnaissance, artillery spotting, and light bombing, as well as air-to-air fighting.

Kit features six Parasols in distinctive markings and options. All feature detailed cockpits, weapons, and engines:

1. Morane Type L 3253 RNAS, flown by Sub-Lieutenant Reginald Warneford, RN, VC: Lt. Warneford of 1 Squadron RNAS encountered German airship LZ37 off the coast of Belgium on June 7, 1915. Despite defensive fire from the airship, Warneford made several attacks on it, hitting it with his bomb-load of six 25-pound bombs. LZ37 caught fire and went down with all hands, and Warneford was awarded the Victoria Cross two weeks later. Tragically, Warneford died the day after receiving his award, when the aircraft he was ferrying back to base fell apart in mid-air.

2. Morane Type L Imperial Russian Air Service: The Imperial Russian Air Service flew more aircraft of French manufacture than from any other nation, and built many designs under license. Lack of a strong domestic aircraft production capacity meant that many aircraft were kept flying long after being retired elsewhere; some Type L's were still flying at the time of the Russian Revolution (1917), and flew afterward for both the White and Red forces.

3. Morane Type L French Air Service, flown by Georges Guynemer: Guynemer became one of the top aces and heroes of French air service, to the point that when he vanished during a dogfight in 1917, the whole nation mourned. He began his flying career in squadron MS-3, flying this Morane Parasol and scoring his first victories on it, before converting to the Nieuport 10 and 11.

4. Morane Type L, captured war prize, Ottoman Air Service: With no domestic aircraft production capacity, the Ottoman Turks had to use whatever airplanes their allies in Germany and Austria-Hungary could spare, or whatever they could capture and put into service. This aircraft could have been captured (probably from the RNAS, which operated the Type L in the Dardanelles) or could be one of the three Pfalz A.II's Germany supplied to Ottoman Turkey.

5. Pfalz A.II, Pfalz-built copy of Type L, of FFA 9b: The Pfalz aircraft works of Bavaria had, before the war, acquired a license from Morane-Saulnier to build the Type L. They continued to do so after the war began, building a small number of two-seaters and a single-seat fighter version they developed.

6. Pfalz E.II Pfalz-built single-seat fighter copy of Type L: see above. The Pfalz E.IIs were issued to two-seater squadrons in pairs to be used as escorts. Some may have been supplied to Austria-Hungary.

These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
