Dominion of Pike and Shot

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Dominion of Pike and Shot is a very very simple set of solo wargames rules, built on the Dominion of the Spear game engine, allowing one to fight two Renaissance armies (1495 - 1667 AD) against each other in around ten minutes. They are written for the game to generate a plausible and with some imagination an amusing narrative. Although figures can be used, battles can easily be fought on paper (no measuring) using pen or pencil and two different coloured six sided dice.

95 army lists are included divided into the periods: Italian Wars, Ottoman Turk Wars, Northern and Eastern Europe, England and Scotland and Ireland, Dutch Revolt (80 Years War), French Wars of Religion, Thirty Years War, English Civil Wars, Wars of the Polish Deluge, and Around the World. Armies consist of 3-6 units or commands and the points system is included. There is a complete play through of a battle between a French army and a Spanish army in the latter part of the Italian Wars.

A very brief introduction to Renaissance Warfare, and Designer Notes are included along with a quick reference sheet on the back cover. The rules include rules for pre-battle artillery bombardments, artillery, rallying units, Spanish Tercios, and different types of cavalry such as Reiters and Cuirassiers.

This is easily read on a tablet or mobile phone and can be printed as an A5 booklet (click booklet and fit to page in printing options). 32 A5 pages.

This is great! One qn- artillery hits armoured on a 5 or 6, but unarmoured on a 6, making it easier to hit armoured. is that historical? i don't know renaissance so it seems counter-intuitive?

Hi John, artillery in these rules are modelled in two ways. First there is the pre-battle bombardment which was normally pretty ineffective, but may cause an infantry unit to retire to avoid being hit (but it is still in the game) or cavalry to charge prematurely and without orders. Then there are the relatively rare artillery units on the battlefield which need a 5 or 6 to hit armoured infantry and a 6 to hit everything else (including armoured cavalry). If you look at the army lists “armoured” infantry is used for infantry in large blocks close together, such as Tercios, later Tercios, Swiss pikemen and Landsknechts etc., and is used for infantry with a defence bonus and not necessarily because they have thicker armour. To my mind such units presented a bigger and easier target for the primitive artillery of the Renaissance. An army with armoured infantry would be wise to try to avoid them directly attacking artillery but screen them with other lighter troops to counter the artillery first. This seems historically...See more

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
