Normandy Campaign 2-mile Square grid — Beaches & Cotentin Peninsula

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Refight the invasion of Normandy for large-scale rulesets (like Sam Mustafa's Eisenhower; one battalion per stand, three battalions per square). An 18x44 square grid of 2-mile squares features all major terrain types plus atmospheric details for "color."

Speaking of color, the Normandy Campaign series has a green land area and a darker blue sea area compared to the colorful contours and light blue sea of the D-Day series, which is similar but designed as a reference for making smaller skirmish or tactical game tables.

Includes the D-Day beaches, the Cotentin Peninsula, and enough terrain inland beyond Caen to cover the campaign from June 6 through most of July 1944.

This super-detailed map is based on a Michelin 1947 road map of Normandy (which was sold to returning veterans) with three levels of roads, town blocks & names, rivers, beaches (low & high tide lines), gridded hexes or squares PLUS tons of info added: 20-meter contour level edges*, with capital ship anchorages, forts, forests, swamps, and bocage areas.

Each square on this map is 2 Miles wide with Major Terrain Types: Flat, Forest, Soft Ground (swamp), Urban, and Bocage areas. A terrain key can be downloaded for free from my blog at WargameCampaign.wordpress.

The thumbnail "cover" image shows the whole area map you are buying at the bottom and an example, enlarged portion south of Omaha Beach.

How big is it? If you enlarge the map's scale to (for example) 2 miles per 3.1", the full map would be just over 4.7x11.4 FEET! Or print just a portion, like shown for the first two days of the invasion on Little Wars TV.

The PDF map's actual size is 36.666" high by 90" wide and can be reduced or enlarged. The detail will not get grainy/fuzzy when enlarged because it was drawn with "vectors" in Adobe Illustrator. The 8 Megabyte map file comes as a PDF and can be opened in the free program Adobe Acrobat Reader.

PS If you prefer a 2-mile hex grid or No Grid, stay tuned; I expect to upload those soon.

*Important Note: features not included in this Normandy Campaign series that were included in the D-Day map series: Bookmarks and colored contours (just the edges of the contours are shown in this map version).

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
