The Second World War

Game Design: John Douglas Powers

The Second World War is a grand-strategic, historical simulation game about World War II. Players represent the major powers involved in the conflict and have at their command the forces with which to wage war and achieve victory for their country or alliance.

The game covers the European, North African, and Pacific Theaters on three maps and four counter-sheets.

Difficulty is rated at a 6 out of ten, ages 12 and up.

Design Notes:
The Second World War was originally prototyped by Peter Bertram and Randall Mac Innis in 1985. It was originally envisioned as a medium-complexity wargame to fall somewhere between the existing designs, Axis and Allies and World in Flames, which were either too abstracted for us hard-core, grognard wargamers or too massive to be played within the confines of our housing. This version finds the right balance and delivers exactly what we'd hoped: a fun game about WWII with a lot of meat, but not so complicated that you need to be an accountant to enjoy it.

The game scale, the 3-map composition, and the use of megahexes to regulate naval movement were originally set by Peter and Randall. They are the only elements that remained intact throughout development. While designer John D. Powers had to make many trade-offs between realism and playability, the latter was the primary concern. Once the nuances of the system are understood and exploited by all players, you will find that historical strategies will yield surprisingly historical results.

We hope that players find it to be enjoyable.

Dang, but it looks great. And Board Game Geek offers a great viewing too.

And even the tricky printing is not the end of the world.

But the table needed... trouble with that :) It's why I'm not playing my Advanced Third Reich or World in Flames lately.

Nice price today as well.

I just purchased TSWW. I like everything I see, except for the maps. I don't have the ability to print out large maps. If you can separate the maps into 8 1/2 x 11 sections (I believe it would total 8 Pages), I could easily print out the ETO & PTO and piece them together. I have done this on other wargame vault products and was surprised that wasn't the case on TSWW. I'm sure others potential purchasers will have the same problem. Otherwise, the maps are too small to use, and the game is not usable. Your 22x34 maps can easily be printed on 8 1/2 x 11 paper. It might take a little work but then again you might be able to sell more copies. Thanks.

In Acrobat, if you print in poster mode it will do that for you.

I don't want to be rude or anything, but isn't 135usd for a printnplay game utterly ridiculous? How can you explain such a price? It's more than the print version costs.

The listed price is 19.95. No idea where you're getting that number. If you're seeing something different then there's something up with Wargamevault or your browser.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
