Fire in the Sky, Vol. 1 Battles Over Germany, 1944

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Fire in the Sky is a set of wargame rules designed to simulate large-scale air combat in WW2. Unlike many sets that have already been written, Fire in the Sky does not attempt to put players in the seat of the individual pilot’s cockpit, flying maneuvers or managing ammunition. Instead, this game aims to let players feel like a squadron or flight commander, commanding dozens of planes at once.

Fire in the Sky eschews nuts and bolts simulation, plotting flight paths, or tracking fuel to produce a game which can capture actions that involve a large number of aircraft, like Adlertag (“Eagle Day”) during the Battle of Britain, the dramatic “Big Week” operations of the US Army Eighth Air Force, or the airstrikes carried out against the KidButai during the Battle of Midway.

Fire in the Sky Volume 1: Big Week is the first book for Fire in the Sky. It contains the game’s core rules, a special Action Chart with the planes used in early 1944 for Operation Argument, the allied offensive known as “Big Week,” and a set of scenarios allowing you to relive the action in the skies above Germany. Additionally, Volume 1: Big Week contains a special campaign generator, Target For Today, which will allow you to create endlessly replayable scenarios involving the 8th Air Force.

Clever fast play system. We’re aircraft react to each other and decisions need to be made to exploit you opponents position. Battles are not fought to the death, they tend to peter out as aircraft run out of fuel and ammo.

A bit swingy due to the 1d10 system but fast enough to allow a quick reset and play again.

Recommended.

I know this is very much something for the distant future, but I assume at some point Eastern Front/Russian aircraft might be included? Thank you for your time.

Definitely in the long term plans. Expect Pacific (Midway/Coral Sea), Battle of Britain, Early War (Flying Tigers), and eventually Operation Pedestal. Mark is hard at work on it.

I am wondering if scenario info on "section" means a single stand on the Litko V-thingy? (so, 4 fighters for section?). If I were to go buy 1/600, and I wanted enough for the largest scenario in the book, how many planes (per model type) do I need? Or, absent my crazy question here, is there maybe a place somewhere online that someone has listed out an answer? Thanks!! This will help--I just downloaded rules but haven't done reading, so, of course, if my answer is in the book, I'll find it.

A section is a stand, yes. A Squadron is made up of a number of stands. You can check out the MGR Youtube channel for video tutorials.

Will Volume 1 be required to play in the Pacific, or will it be a stand-alone title?

Can I also ask how big the board is (ranks and files)? Graphics on the videos make it look like 10 by 8 squares, but the mat seems bigger. I need to prepare...

It's up to the individual, but the default is a 6'x4' table with 6" Zones, so 12 by 8 Zones.

For the 1/600th

Brookhurst Hobbies
https://brookhursthobbies.com/miniatures/tumbling-dice/1-600-aircraft/

Or directly from TD
https://tumblingdiceuk.com/

Alternatively Pico Armor.
https://picoarmor.com/product-category/3mm-wwii-miniatures/

For aircraft I prefer TDs

Hey folks, one more question (you think you've got the rules memorized, but there's always one more).

What is the impact of a bomber section becoming detached from its formation (mentioned p9, and also in scenarios).
Does this relate to "Combat is conducted between the attacker and one enemy squadron or detached enemy section within the zone" (p7).

It’s subtle, but you’ve got the right idea.

If I attack with a full Squadron, they throw one dice per section attached. The same is true of the bombers. So three bomber sections together throw 3d10 defensive fire, but a lone section detached could be targeted and picked off because it only rolls 1d10 defense. This is how the rules represent the “combat box”.

I played a second game with my son: a BOB dogfight with 12 Spitfires facing 12 Me109s. Three Spitfires went down again a single German loss. We had a great game, but some further questions arose. Thanks in advance for answering.
1. Tailing: A tailing section cannot react, but can a tailed section react and, if successful, then try to ‘attempt to shake a tail’ with its first AP ?
2. After an attack, fighters have to take a scatter test. Can they continue to move/attack if they have any AP left or does a scatter test always end their activation?
3. Fighter A enters a square in order to attack enemy Z. Enemy Y in an adjacent square succeeds in a reaction test and engages in a dogfight with A. Both A and Y fire. A survives and rolls ‘no effect’ on the scatter table. Fighter A can now continue its attack and thus fires a second time. Correct?
4. Tailing (p7) – Tailing: If a fighter rolls ‘Break Off’ on a Scatter test after a Rear Bounce attack...
4a. The fighter MAY ignore...See more

1. My instinct says you can't react when being tailed, but I will double check with Mark.
2. You can always spend remaining AP, Scatter tests don't end your activation. However, remember that you can only take a combat action once per activation, so if you already fought, you can't do so again.
3. Right. The limitation is the number of combat actions you can take in a turn, not the number of dogfights you participate in.
4. Tailing is always a choice. You can always choose to tail on a rear bounce - the results of the scatter test don't effect it.

Recently purchased, through not played yet.
The rules are well written, and make sensible decisions regarding detail and abstraction.
I look forward to some fast moving action filled games.

I would appreciate clarification on the "Big Week: Frontal Assault" rule, specifically where to position the fighters after their attack.
The rules say "Adjacent zone that ...." and later "Placed touching the front of the enemy bombers".

Do the attackers step down the length of the bomber box, or can they peel off to adjacent flanks.
If they peel off, how can they be "touching the front".

I hope you can help, it's the only section of the rules I've struggled to understand.

They go straight down the box, one zone after another. It’s a very finicky rule, but we felt it correctly modeled the Luftwaffe’s tactics during Big Week.

It’s mainly useful in scenarios where the bomber groups are lined up one behind another in three zones.

Thanks Carl, that clarifies matters a lot.
It also matches my understanding of Luftwaffe veterans promoting the head-on attack.

A nice touch for campaign specific rules.

Hi, I have recently purchased the rules with the intent to get them printed to read before playing a game. Unfortunately where I get my rules printed say they are unable to print these due to a password protection. I currently don't have a printer or a tablet, now I'm stuck with an unusable set of rules. Bummer

Loving this!

Carl, some questions for you!
1. Can fighter groups pass through (over/under) enemy fighter groups? Or does that just put them at a high risk of being jumped (especially if they try to fly under)
2. Is there a limit on how many aircraft squadrons can be in a zone? If a fighter group has entered the zone to attack bombers, presumably friendly fighters can then dive in to engage the enemy fighters?

1. Yes. But of course if someone did that I’d take advantage of their proximity and react when they did!

2. No limits. As for attacks, you’d have to choose which sections are going after the Bombers and which are attacking fighters. Remember that Attacking bombers costs 0 AP whereas the fighters might cost you, depending on whether you want to dogfight or bounce.

We just played our first game this evening. Two more questions:
1. What if a new activation card is higher nor lower but the same (e.g. a 4 on a 4)?
2. Three attacking sections score 2 hits on three defending sections, one of which is the squadron leader. How do we decide whether one of the hits is on the squadron leader?
Thanks in advance.

1. It needs to be higher to go again, so you'd pass to the other player.
2. In those situations or any where you need to "randomize" a hit, just use a d6.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
