"FIRE AT WILL, COMMANDER!"

No sooner had Fleet Captain Frederic Antimony spoken these words than a flash appeared on the viewscreen, and a half-dozen enemy starfighters disappeared from existence. Antimony’s crew had learned long ago to anticipate their captain’s moves, and almost before the order came down the Indefatigable’s powerful weapon batteries had lashed out with frightening efficiency. A cheer erupted from the crew.

Antimony wished he could share in their optimism. He knew better than to underestimate his opponent: the battle had been joined, and until it was won, he could not allow himself even a moment’s lapse in concentration. And yet, Antimony could not help feeling a bit disappointed. He had expeceted more from his opponent; so far, she had displayed little of the tactical brilliance that had forced the Imperial Starmada into this climactic confrontation.

"Captain! Three enemy destroyers are de-cloaking in our starboard quarter!" Antimony whirled and fixed his gaze on the screen, where the new antagonists were even now coming into full view.

So, he thought to himself, this will be interesting after all...

STARMADA™ is a tabletop game of starship combat. At its most basic level, players take command of space fleets in a general attempt to reduce each other to just so much space junk. At its most advanced, the game can breathe life into any science fiction background players might imagine.

Novices shouldn’t fret; the core rules have been designed with ease of play in mind, accessible even to beginners. On the other hand, seasoned veterans should find the concise nature of the rules quite refreshing. STARMADA allows players to concentrate on the finer points of squashing their opponent rather than arguing over rules interpretations, without sacrificing any of the flavor or excitement of more complex games.

Simple, but not simplistic, is the guiding principle.

The Core Rulebook celebrates STARMADA’s 30th Anniversary with a complete structural overhaul: every rule is now integrated into a single, logical flow — no more flipping between pages to find that elusive option. Although some updates have been made to gameplay, existing starships can be used with minimal adjustments.

What are you waiting for? Grab an opponent, cue up your favorite sci-fi soundtrack, and lead your STARMADA to victory!

Is there a color version? Seems like a lot of the graphics are color but only displayed in black and white?

No. All of the interior art is grayscale. However, the PDF download does include full-color front and back covers, if you want to make your printout look pretty.

Any chance you could add POD to the options here?

I can look into it, but honestly the test prints I received previously are not nearly the same quality as you would get from ordering a print version from the MJ12 web site: http://mj12.games

Owning a bunch of the books I now admit to confusion. Where does this compare to Unity? Do you need to change all blurbs pointing to Unity to point to Core? Both at '2.0'?

Have both, so not a big concern to me. Just haven't read both yet.

Thanks for your purchase! The new rules are a refinement/update to Unity: ships built in that edition are fully compatible with this book, per the guidelines provided on pp.68-69. (They are also found on pp.15-16 of the preview PDF.)

It would be very nice if the core rules and other rules PDFs had bookmarks for digital use. Sigh. Not everyone can print them off.

Thanks for the reply - Chapters/headings would be a great start, and if it is not too much of a hassle subheadings in a tree off the headings perhaps? You could always go wholehog and hyperlink all the rules references to each other as well of course, although that might be out of scope... ;-)

How does the game deal with the three dimensions of space combat? I read the preview but couldn't see anything in the movement rules which accounts for being above or below the plane of battle for other ships, or relative to the ecliptic of a stellar system. I'm a big fan of Jack Campbell's "Lost Fleet" novels and would like a simple, but not simplistic, rules set to accommodate the many battles from those books. To do that, though, requires managing in three dimensions as a critical component of those battles. I'd love for these rules to do that and maybe they do but I missed it in the preview. Thanks.

There are rules for 3d combat in the book, although they are relatively primitive compared to, say, Squadron Strike from Ad Astra Games. If 3d is something you really want, I suggest you take a look there: https://www.wargamevault.com/product/157057/Squadron-Strike-Rulebook-Deluxe-2nd-edition

You should do a Starmada/Squadron Strike crossover.

Can I use the ships in Klingon Armada with these rules or would I need to re-build them?

You can use them with these rules. The few required alterations -- most of which don't apply to SFU ships anyway -- are discussed on pp.15-16 of the preview (pp.68-69 of the Rulebook).

Thanks for the reply Daniel. I'll give this new version a try. I may do some ship building in any case since SFB isn't exactly my take on TOS. Cheers!

The existing SFU products function just fine with the updated rules, with a few minor tweaks. I should be able to get a summary document posted soon. We're moving forward with the next book in that series, Rumors of War, which introduces the Andros, ISC, and Vudar.

The preview has a rundown of the updates/revisions from Unity; however, the biggest changes have to do with how starship defenses are categorized. We've made it much easier to simulate different tech systems and/or universes between fleets.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
