'We know the Earth burned. We know that a worldwide civilisation of nations fell. We know that billions of people died and that for a century the world tore itself apart in a neverending conflict. We know that the ticking clock of apocalypse struck midnight and darkness fell.

'Exactly how or why it happened, we may never know. Too much has been lost. Too much forgotten. The Burning left behind little more than ash, across which marched the new Gods of War they called "mechs".'

Assemble your battle group and take up your arms in the new 6mm combined arms battle game from Precinct Omega Publishing. Horizon Wars: Midnight Dark returns to the roots of Horizon Wars in more ways than one, building on the very first game published by the author in 2016 in a brand new format but with the same familiar Horizon Wars mechanics that garnered rave reviews for the first two games in the series.

Miniatures agnostic and designed to be as simple and accessible as all Precinct Omega Publishing games, Horizon Wars: Midnight Dark is set to be the new standard for mass battle science fiction games.

I had a question with the damage. Is there a lore reason why you get to allocate the reduction in stats for your mechs as opposed to it being random or your opponent? It feels a bit strange that I get to choose to lower the stats I want to on my mechs (apart from lucky 12s).

I’m glad I picked this title up! A question though.
Is there a plan to update the PDF with the errata document?
It shouldn’t take long to do so. A few cut, copy, and pastes and then update the file here would be an automatic on my to-do list. It certainly would make life easier for those that purchased the PDF.
After all, isn’t that the major benefit of e-pubs?

I assure you it absolutely is nothing like as simple as you think it is.

So, no.There is one version of the rules. Whether you bought a PDF or a print edition, your rulebooks will look the same as everyone else's.

Yep. Plays pretty much as-is with Heavy Gear minis.

Does this edition have more unit variety and/or customization than the original?

Also, how does it compare to Strato Minis' Hardwar?

Yes, it does. There's s *little* more variety in the basic elements (added superheavy mechs, cavalry and aircraft). But I added a lot more customising options, including troop quality options, heroes and strategic assets.

I actually borrowed a feature from Hardwar, in that D is now an active stat as well. But otherwise, it's best thought of as a parallel evolution of the original Horizon Wars.

So I've purchased this and so far very cool but I do have a question... Does anyone know how much it costs to apply a Transport upgrade? If I wanted to use a Light Cavalry element with Transport 1 for example, how much would that unit cost?

Also wondering this. There is no rules-as-written way to make a land based transport because none of the upgrades give the Transport trait. Only large aircraft have transport by default even though the rules say:

"Aircraft with the Transport upgrade must be landed in order for transported elements to be able to deploy."

Implying there was intention for ground units to have Transport. It's just not there! Crazy for a sci fi game to lack APCs as standard!

There is no Transport upgrade. Transport is a trait only available to aircraft.

Long-term Precinct Omega fans will know that I (the author) have strong feelings on the subject of "battlefield taxis". However, I included the Transport trait so that those who disagree with me have got a starting point from which to design their own Transport upgrade if they wanted to apply it to other elements.

Less "crazy" than "informed by actual experience in the Armed Forces". To save me from re-treading old material, here's a link to my blog on the subject: https://www.precinctomega.co.uk/post/the-myth-of-the-battlefield-taxi

No offence meant by "crazy", but it's no surprise that people might see even a hard sci-fi game and still want the odd "rule of cool" trope. Perhaps I underestimated the level of "ish" in hard-ish sci-fi. I appreciate that the transport rule can be used freely for those of us who might fancy it. I don't think most designs of sci fi mechs, for example, would hold up under the scrutiny of what's practical in the real world.

Each to their own!

I am a bit confused on how heroes work, or at least with the example.
Going off the heavy infantry element example, the element has a hero attached to it and gives the unit +1 to Mobility and Agility for the cost of 1 point to add the hero.
But, when looking at the Hero upgrade "Heroic Qualities" it says up to 3 points can be reallocated.

So how is the example heavy infantry getting +1 to Mobility and Agility if none of its other statistics are being reduced?

Really enjoying this edition so far. Looking forward to when my physical copy comes in.

I only have the printer friendly version for now so I hope there is nothing different in the final text.
In the Heavy Infantry example, the Hero attached has only the "Heroic Initiative" upgrade, not the "Heroic Qualities".
Even if it costs 0, upgrades are always only optional, and in the example it has not been bought.

Yeah. That's a mistake in the example that I'll address in the Errata doc I'm working on. It should be +1 Mobility and -1 Agility.

Hey! I'd be nice to know the major differences between this one and the Osprey old one for us who already got the book. In the likes of 'it includes the supplement' or maybe 'rules for this or that have slightly changed' ...it's OK if it is the same product but yours not Osprey's due to the art etc. Even being the same I may get it anyways sooner or later. Just wanted to know what to expect from the book.

Well, tbf to me, it's not like I haven't been blogging the hell out of the development process and routinely talking about it on the FB page, sub-rebbit (r/HorizonWars) and on the Patreon (that's what people pay for, after all). But, as a quick summary:

1. Those who played the original will find it familiar, but different.
2. Core mechanics are the same.
3. Command is now a major feature and orders are no longer the easily-renewable resource they once were.
4. Like the other HW games, heroes now feature and elements can be upgraded with heroes (not necessarily officers!) who can modify the element and bring their own special skills.
5. Solo rules are built in.
6. Strategic assets made it across from Over the Horizon.
7. Aircraft rules are a lot simpler.

I've added some preview pages. Should've done that for release, but right to the last minute it wasn't clear exactly which pages were going to be the best choice as the order of layout kept changing, and then I forgot. Sorry. Fixed now, and I've got the whole of the "Primer" section up for preview, so people should get a decent sense of the game from that.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
