Arrowstorm: Battle Games in Medieval Britain

CAN YOU WEATHER THE ARROWSTORM?

In this gridded-layout miniature wargame, you take the role of a medieval king, bishop, lord, or commander leading your army on the battlefield. You must choose where and how to focus your troops' actions and control the battle’s impetus. The battle is partly fought on the tabletop like other miniature wargames but is also fought just as hard on the Tactics Chart, providing an additional mind-game against your opponent.

Command your units to move and fight in the areas of the battlefield you wish, but leave the actual process of fighting to your unit commanders. This is represented by the random factor of dice and each of your units’ abstract but often-decreasing Battle Rating. Because of this, your focus is kept where it should be – out-thinking your opponent by using superior tactics and exploiting their weaknesses on the battlefield.

Arrowstorm is not intended as a heavy simulation of medieval warfare but as an enjoyable, simple, and fast-playing battle game. You’ll find that much of the action is stylized and streamlined. Don’t think of “turns” in the usual wargaming way – in each turn your units may fight or move several times, countered by your opponent after every action, creating a very fluid game but at the same time making cohesive planning difficult to achieve.

Please note that Arrowstorm shares the same basic rules with my Age of Penda book. Period-specific troop types, army lists, special rules, and minor rules differences exist.

THE ‘YOU COMMAND’ SERIES

‘You Command’ is a series of light miniature wargames by Origins Award winner Daniel Mersey (Lion Rampant, Dragon Rampant, Battle Ravens, and many more games). When you play a ‘You Command’ game, your goal is to defeat your opponent by out-thinking them tactically using the innovative Tactics Chart, and then by out-fighting their model army on the tabletop battlefield.

It's not specifically written for them and army lists end with the 100 Years War, but you should be able to play Wars of the Roses games easily enough by choosing the right special tactics for your armies.

Bought a copy and had a few questions while reading.

p.15 Is a shoot action only at a single target area? The rules states "Units shooting from the same area may target different areas". The tactics chart says shoot one area, does this mean shoot FROM one area or INTO one area?

p.20 special tactics GOAD, does this apply only to enemy mounted knights and when you battle back is that with ALL your units in the area?

p.21 special tactics SKIRMISH, says "must move into an area with no enemies in it or adjacent to it..." What do you mean by "or adjacent to it"?

Will probably have a few more questions later after i try out the rules
Thanks

To answer your questions:

p.15 Is a shoot action only at a single target area? The rules states "Units shooting from the same area may target different areas". The tactics chart says shoot one area, does this mean shoot FROM one area or INTO one area?
Answer: Shoot from one area - as you note, units shooting from one area may target different areas as written in the rules.

p.20 special tactics GOAD, does this apply only to enemy mounted knights and when you battle back is that with ALL your units in the area?
Answer: Yes, only Knights as stated in the rules. And as usual, all of your units in the area Battle Back.

p.21 special tactics SKIRMISH, says "must move into an area with no enemies in it or adjacent to it..." What do you mean by "or adjacent to it"?
Answer: The area you move into cannot have enemy units either in it or in an area adjacent to that area (except for your current area, as written in the rules).

Thanks for the immediate response. Couple more questions,

When shooting, if the missile unit is in a covered area like woods (with no enemies in the same area) and the target unit is in an adjacent open area, does the 5+ still apply?
I ask because in your SCOTTORUM MALLEUS rules on P.31 under the TERRAIN section it states, "Shooting into or out of that area, only hits on a 5+".

Again when shooting, if you eliminate all enemy units in your own area can you then target another unit in an adjacent area. For example,, say there are 3 missile units and 1 enemy unit in the same area and the enemy unit is down to 1 BR remaining, must all the missile units shoot at that unit, and any extra hits wasted?

finally, will there be any setup/battle scenarios provided in the future?

This covers all my questions.
Much thanks.

No problem.

For shooting into terrain, the two games are different. Arrowstorm is as written - only the area being shot into makes a difference, not the shooter's area.

For changing targets, no this can't be done. You need to decide targets before dice are rolled: "Add up the total Battle Rating of all your units shooting into a single area and roll that many dice."

I have possible plans for scenarios, but when/how they are published will depend on the rules' popularity.

Daniel, if I were looking to play a 2nd/3rd Crusade game (roughly 1145-1200) would Arrowstorm cover this time period? Or is this targeted at the 100 Years/War of the Roses era?

Thanks

Arrowstorm covers both periods but is specifically geared towards battles in the British Isles and France. This means it doesn't have the right troop types for all armies involved in The Crusades, so I wouldn't recommend these rules for your Crusades games. However, you might like to take a look at the Crusader States supplment for my Lion Rampant rules?

I've made a small number of clarifications to the rulebook and everyone who has purchased it should now have been sent the updated version.

p. 7 Definition of Warriors: "they are vulnerable to Missiles". I guess it should say "they are vulnerable to Mounted".

Thanks for asking. Yes, it should say Mounted. In an older version, they were vulnerable to both.

P. 23. Hundred Years War English have 'Close formation' but if I'm not mistaken this special tactic is not explained elsewhere.

Great rules on first read!

Thanks for buying Arrowstorm and for your questions. I'm going to be updating the PDF with a few queries and errors, and that will be distributed via Wargame Vault for free. Close Formation is like Shieldwall.

Possibly in the future. By releasing PDF-only to begin with, it means I can correct any typos/unclear text and circulate updates easily to those who have already purchased. That's not possible with print copies.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
