Engage in historical conflicts or embark on your own nation vs. nation campaign.
"The Road to Quatre Bras" series of battle maps resurrects important locations that played a crucial role in the French military's advance and defensive strategies, as well as serving as outposts for the allies during the 100 days campaign, ultimately leading to the iconic battle of Quatre Bras in june 1815. Whether you choose to take on the historical perspective of the allies, defending key cities against the advancing French forces, or embodying the French and attempting to conquer your way towards Brussels, these maps offer an immersive experience. Additionally, they provide ample opportunity for players to create their own unique campaigns and engage in nation-versus-nation gameplay.

Thuin
Thuin, a village located near the French Belgium border, has witnessed countless wars throughout its rich history, dating back even to the times of the Roman Empire. Over the centuries, Thuin has played a vital role as a strategic location due to its elevated position and the presence of a bridge that connects the city heights over the Sambre River. Nestled among lush gardens and fortified walls on its hills, Thuin stands as an imposing stronghold, capable of withstanding any challenges posed by potential conquerors.

Battle grids
The map is organized into large grids, with each one measuring 10x10cm or 4x4 inches. These grids, which we refer to as operational squares, are then further divided into four smaller squares that are 5x5cm or 2x2 inches in size. This division allows for engagements on a macro level. The larger squares are utilized for moving troops in group formations, while the smaller squares are perfect for tactical engagements. This system offers players the chance to engage in combat using their preferred style.

Order of battle Nation vs Nation
In the game, players have the incredible opportunity to unleash their strategic prowess by creating their own personalized order of battle. With the capacity to field up to 80 units on the battlefield per nation, the game truly allows players to showcase their unique tactical style and adaptability. The freedom to create their own order of battle is not only empowering but also opens up a multitude of possibilities for players to explore different strategies and playstyles.

Historical order of battle
To recreate the events that occurred in Thuin in 1815, it is recommended that the attacking force consists of 40 units of their choosing, while the defenders should have 20 units. The French forces greatly outnumbered the small Prussian contingent during this confrontation. Playing with a 2 versus 1 balance can provide an enjoyable and challenging experience. Initially, the advantage lies with the defenders due to their elevated positions and access to deploy cannons.

River crossings
There are three options for crossing the Sambre river. The first is to use the bridge located in the center of the map. However, this method poses a risk as the bridge is within range of enemy artillery, potentially resulting in significant casualties.

The other two options involve using boats positioned on either side of the map to transport units across the river one at a time per turn. While this approach may take longer, it offers greater protection against artillery fire.

Nice uncluttered map. I am sure that these maps are quite suitable for other eras, and this has such a beautiful river crossing set up already to challenge ambitious generals ;o) Then, of course, they can be mirrored to increase their versatility.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
