Runestar D12

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Runestar D12 is a mass-fantasy wargame, set in an 'Early Medieval' world.

The combat engine uses a one-roll dice mechanic to ensure swift play.

Magick is resolved using an innovative 'Rune Card' system which rewards creativity and quick-thinking.

Players can use any miniatures they wish to represent the armies of Runestar - your imagination is the only limit. The game runs best with 28mm or 15mm miniatures. One model represents one one model - this is not an 'element' based game.

All units are built using a mathematical formula and there are plentiful special rules to provide players with variety.

The core rulebook comes with eleven army lists, a bestiary, six scenarios and forty-eight rune cards.

The book is filled with original art and lore, bringing the world of Goragaia to life. Narrative wargamers and role-players are more than welcome to immerse themselves in this original fantasy setting.

Ready your mount and charge your rune blade, general. The Runestar Saga has only just begun...

What makes Runestar D12 unique? -

1) Rune card magic system: combine runes to make your own spells
2) One-roll combat on a D12 for quick resolution
3) Simultaneous strategy - players share a turn
4) Battle lines are stable and units don't get wiped out when they retreat
5) An original setting on the nodeworld of Goragaia - full of myth and lore.
6) Innovative rules for great weapons, crossbows and long reach weapons.

Which armies are featured in the core book?

The human armies featured in the core book are compatible with most medieval collections - from heavy cavalry lists to 'barbarian' clans to shieldwalls to steppe hordes to desert tribes. They include one Undying Legion list.

The armies of the Elder Races are compatible with the basic fantasy races we all know and love (i.e. Rilkans can be represented by 'Elvish' troops, Au Ko by 'large orcs' and so on.)

Human lists: Acrosti, Valiscythians, Psceltir, Rothian Kingdoms, Sarmidians, Symbol Kings.

Elder Races: Au Ko, Sidheril, Rilkans, The Morog, Dalf Byorn.

More trial lists are on the website and players are free to get in touch if their favourite army is not yet represented.

Hi,

Reading through, and it looks like a fun game. I especially like the elegant combat rules. Just one question though (at the moment). How do you take prisoners?

Regards
John

Hi John,

Thanks for the feedback! Please let me know how you get on with the system.

Prisoners - when a unit routs from melee combat it can suffer additional wounds. Any model slain by these extra wounds is taken prisoner (put model to one side) and is worth 50% extra victory points.

Beasts and warbands don't take prisoners!

Hi there, is this element based or individual figure removal?

(Bonus points if there's artillery and chariots in the game!)

Hey Glenn,

This is individual figure removal! One model represents one model, whether at 15mm or 28mm.

As the first purchaser you earn the title of Absolute Legend!

There are a few chariots here and there and a bit of artillery in the 'Dalf Byorn' (Dwarfy) list. If you want the trial 'General artillery list' - which can use up to 10% of your army points - give me an email!

I'm here to support the Runestar community all the way pal.

Best,
Sel

Thanks! Yeah, I was intrigued enough to buy before an answer!

Looks good from a quick read. Clear, any question I had was answered in the next paragraph. Designers notes in boxes were helpful and a really good qrs.

A few things might make more sense after playing, I really appreciate that morale is more than just "remove unit if failed" like many games.

I play solo, so if I get a game in I'll write a review.

One thing I'd suggest, is a preview, even if it's just the index. I've based purchases on page count and ratio of rules to lists, background etc.

Glenn there should be a quick / full size preview up?

Yeah until playing it a few times it can be hard to get your head around! I plan to do a few video tutorials too, as some people learn much better by being shown.

Runestar is actually radically different to most rank-and-flank games because it isn't about 'break their morale and chase them down' its about 'wear them down with grinding combats'. Battle lines are much more stable and falling back is not the end of the world. The average Runestar warrior is more powerful than most other games and not just there to make up numbers! There are usually more turns in a game, but turns go faster because combat is one-roll!

I've playtested the army lists on and off for a decade but this is the first proper iteration of the rules out in the world. Your feedback would be much appreciated. Feel free to contact me for any rule or lore clarifications too - I'm always happy to help :)

How is the Runestar treating ya Glenn, have you managed to get many games in?

I realized thanks to your post (and a few others) that this kind of game might cater for solo gamers, especially as building up a player base or finding other players can be really hard. I might write some extra rules or scenarios for solo gamers, interested in hearing your thoughts on this.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
