Trial by Battle is a set of wargames rules for playing games set in the Medieval period of history. They are designed to be easy to learn and to play and are ideal for a quick game. They are ideal for players who are not very familiar with wargames rules or who don’t have hours to play with. Sometimes this type of ruleset is called a “beer and pretzels” game. Neither beer nor pretzels are required to play, but a game is always more enjoyable with good refreshments.

The rules aim to be representative of how medieval armies fought but aren’t an exact simulation. They don’t provide for all the different variations in types of soldiers and armies during the Medieval period. For instance, there is an Archers unit that can represent crossbowmen or longbowmen. The rules provide the framework for an enjoyable Medieval wargame that captures the feel of battles in the Middle Ages.

The rules include six scenarios and some sample army lists to help you get started.

Enjoying the rules but confused by this example - The Foot Knights inflict
5 Hits in total, 3 on the Infantry, and 2 on the Light Cavalry. The Infantry and Light Cavalry together only manage 3 Hits on the Foot Knights, so both the Infantry and Light Cavalry recoil. They will recoil in the direction of the front facing enemy and the Light Cavalry will remain in contact on the flank. So it seems both the infantry and light cavalry don’t recoil as the light cavalry remain in contact?

Trial by Battle is a simple set of medieval rules that gives a satisfyingly challenging game. Armies consist of 6-8 units, although the rules would certainly cope with larger forces. Troops are divided into types which reflect those found in typical medieval armies. Units collect attrition points which lead to courage tests. Units can suddenly disintegrate or grimly carry on fighting.
The rules also contain representative army lists and a set of scenarios that could be linked into a campaign.
Players are encouraged to modify the rules to suit their own interpretation of medieval warfare.
Recommended to beginners and veteran players alike.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
