Four Delvers

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Four Delvers is a lighthearted solo miniature adventure game designed to pick up and play when you are all alone but still want to push lead, roll dice, and take part in a grand adventure.

4D is designed to be fun, fast, and simpler than most solo miniature games...while still requiring tactics and intelligent play to succeed. This book includes all the rules needed to play, random monster and treasure, and 12 infinitely playable scenarios including dungeon crawling rules. All you need is a d12, an 18” play area, terrain, your favorite miniatures, and 30-60 minutes to kill.

The prieview showcases the core rules, so check it out before you buy.

Editors Note:  This is a reworking of the multi-award winning, double platinum, 6 stars and a bag of chips, 3 Delvers.  After much violent play testing, the rules were returned to something closer to its original form.  If you purchased 3 Delvers, look for a comp copy in your spam folder

Hello! I have a question about the turn order. Is it:

1) Activate one delver model. After its activation is complete, activate one monster. Then activate another (not previously activated) delver. Then activate a different monster, etc.

or

2) Activate all delvers, one at a time. Then, activate all monsters.

When I read the rules, it seemed clear that the correct way to play is option 1. But then I watched a play through on YouTube and he was using option 2, which planted a seed of doubt.

Thanks! The game looks great and I can't wait to give it a try.

I love the miniatures depicted in the PDF document--where can I find them?

On page 14 there is a shaded box that lists all the manufacturers of the miniatures pictured…some of them are still being produced, while some are out of print. The minis pictured are all “old school” from the 70s and 80s.

There are a few that are one of a kind conversions.

After a first play, I have a question about Randomly Placing Things on page 5. It says "Roll d12+1-4 (d12/4 rounded up) and move 2-16 inches up,...''. I think it should be ''(d12/3...'' because otherwise you could not ever have a number of 4, and thus end with 16. Am I correct?

Doh! You are correct. Good catch. It was originally 1d12 + 1d4 in the playtesting, but all other die types were removed, so I just changed it to a quick fraction…guess my fraction skills were rusty. Thanks.

I am happy to help :) After a second play, there is another question. Page 2 says that ''Gold coins are NOT items.''. Does it mean that when rolling on the Loot table they are ignored for the limit of carrying max of 2 items per Delver? For example, I rolled 10-11 = 3 items, and then for each rolled respectively 2 = 2 gold coins, 6 = scroll, and 9 = potion. Can I carry all or do gold coins count as 1 item for the purpose of carrying items = I need to drop something?

Another confusion is with holding their ground by the enemies with ranged attacks as per page 4. Does it mean that if they cannot see delvers they will not move (in effect being unable to do anything unless a delver comes into their LOS)?

Questions
1: Can I use items found in the very same encounter? In my third play Fighter found a crossbow, and I was not sure if I can use it in the same battle.
2: Can a Delver battle back against Air Elemental's Gust = is a free attack before or after being pushed 3"?
3: Liche: Are its spells rolled each activation or will it use one rolled for the entire encounter?
Page 1: The Fighter: "The target makes a sperate...'' it should be ''separate''.
Page 12: The Evil Temple: ''TR: Alter (D),'' it should be "Altar".

Yes…they are not items for purpose of # of items carried, they are added to the gold pool as a resource available to all characters.

Monsters not within 6” of a Delvers will shoot and hold their ground…they only subsequently move if within 6” of a Delvers AFTER shooting.

1. yes
2. When the elemental attacks, the result moves the Delver back 3inches…the Delver is now in that position 3” away…so may take any appropriate actions from that distance.
3. Roll every time a spell is to be cast.

As to Shooting Monsters Activation answer above:
Yes, that is what rules say but it is working only when a Monster sees a Delver, and thus can shoot. In my third game, all enemy shooters, as per their deployment rolls, landed behind a terrain blocking their LOS. Monster activation rules say nothing about it so I ruled that ''holding their ground'' in that case would mean that a Monster with a ranged weapon that cannot see a Delver will do nothing, acting only if a Delver comes into its LOS. Was it a correct interpretation of the rules? Or maybe I get it wrong, and Monsters can actively move to have a LOS = in their first action move outside the blocking terrain, and shoot as their second action?

How many miniatures of certain type (human sized, ogre sized, giant sized) do one needs to play this game? Let's say I have 12 zombies. Will it be enough or do I need more?

Thanks for your interest…for the most part, you will be facing approximately 4-6 monsters at a time. In a scenario where you are incredibly unlucky with the wandering monsters, you may hit around 10-12 but that’s if you haven’t been killing anything (unlikely) and constantly rolling wandering monsters (also unlikely).

The random monster tables have a huge variety of monsters, but you really don’t need them all and can use proxies. Even if you have a huge miniature collection (like me, ha ha) you will most likely only be using 1 or 2 of any given monster type per scenario (maybe 3-6 of extremely common monsters, like goblins).

Hope that gives you an idea of how many minis will be on the table at a time. A lot depends on how fast your skill and tactics result in dispatching monsters. There is a lot of variety, randomness, and luck involved in how many more will (or will not) appear as the scenario progresses.

Ok, here some thoughts and questions:
Page 2: Charge: "Second moves must end 1” from any models and you can’t battle or shoot. " - I suggest to remove it, and place ''and you can’t battle or shoot.'' at the end of "Activation/Move Twice" on the same page for clarity, as IMO it belong there rather than in Charge section.
Page 3: Spell Miscast Table: Shaken: "-2 any more rolls this round" - I do not understand this one. Does it mean -2 to any rolls this round?
Page 5: LS (Light Source): do you roll once at the start or each turn to see if there is a night?
Page 6: Monster Table IV: Fire Elemental is listed twice = 7-8 and 18-19, I think one of them should be Earth Elemental.
Page 6: Monster Special Abilities: Acid and Teleport are not used by any creature listed. Are they there for the future publications?
Page 7: Monster Manual: Basilisk/Dragon/Hell Hound have "Ranged" instead "Ranged Attack".

Thank you for the questions and comments and taking time to give the rules such a thorough read through. I hope you have as much fun playing the game. I’ll skip direct responses to the grammatical and typo type questions…they will be taken into consideration when it’s time for a revised edition, thank you for pointing them out.

“Page 3: Spell Miscast Table: Shaken: "-2 any more rolls this round" - I do not understand this one. Does it mean -2 to any rolls this round?”
-Yes, any more rolls the Wizard makes this round.

“Page 5: LS (Light Source): do you roll once at the start or each turn to see if there is a night?”
-This is under “Set up”, as in setting up the encounter…so roll once at the start of the encounter unless indicated otherwise.

“Page 6: Monster Table IV: Fire Elemental is listed twice = 7-8 and 18-19, I think one of them should be Earth Elemental.”
-Yes, this is a n error…7-8 should be Earth Elemental. ...See more

Big thanks for quick answers :)
I would suggest to send a copy to Ash Barker from Guerrilla Miniature Games. His YT channel https://www.youtube.com/@GuerrillaMiniatureGames/videos is famous about playing many indie games, some of them became widely known because of that ;)

Never mind, it's right there on page 6. I'm an idiot. These rules seem to be just the light, casual dungeon crawler I was looking for. Looking forward to more classes and rpg elements, and I hope there will be more focus on dungeon delving exploration, rather than outdoor set piece battles.

Thanks so much (happy you found the monster stuff). The first supplement “planned” has new characters and a dungeon adventure…it’s partially. Complete, but I’m working simultaneously on multiple projects…wish I had more ”free” time for fun stuff…but don’t we all :)…hopefully sooner than later. Very happy you are enjoying 4D.

It's a cool system, and really fills a gap in the marketplace for a casual, miniatures agnostic dungeon crawl.
I don't understand the point of combat roll modifiers though. If a monster has Batt 6+ and melee +1, isn't that functionally equivalent to just having Batt 5+?

Thank you…I’m guilty of writing it for myself to fill that niche…and then sharing it : D

“Melee +X” actually indicates additional melee attacks beyond the (default) first attack. So, a monster with “Melee +1” has 2 attacks, “Melee +2” gets 3 attacks. It isn’t a modifier to the Battle die roll. Hope that helps.

I have been playing this and have been through 3 of the scenarios so far. It's been a lot of fun. It's simple, to the point where my kids can play with me, but not too simple as to lose interest. There have been some close calls and fun moments. I'm having a blast!

I recently purchased Four Delvers and it looks like a fun, quick game to jump in to. Are supplements still coming out for this (as mentioned below) ?
More scenarios, optional rules/classes and monsters please!

No, ha ha…the game had been played pretty extensively in the format of 4D…but with 3D I wanted to “get away” from the “Heroquest” nod and move to more of a story bases element…but most my original players missed the less “involved” original game…so I reverted a bit. Upon reflection, I should have stuck with this as the original release…and included story based/RPG elements for future supplements. This game can be played “infinitely”, while 3D, as it was, would require more quests before one could play it again. Hope that explains the (quick) change.

Yes…there will be a solo AND group RPG supplement with quests, building on the core miniature skirmish game…The group RPG was created accidentally during play where I was teaching the game and controlling the monsters, while 4 people played the Delvers…needless to say, things always drift out of the parameters of combat when creative players have a GM present :D

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
