Verrotwood

ADD TO WISHLIST >

The skies over the Verrotwood have turned a pale sickly gray. The hopes of men have withered as fast as the crops. Desperate for salvation, people have begun to turn to the long forgotten and unspeakabe things that rest in slumber, deep within the forest.

Venture into the Verrotwood, a folk horror skirmish game. Verrotwood is an easy to learn skirmish game set in a dark world of pagan cults and twisted rituals. The rules have been written with a focus on letting you create your own dark narratives.

Verrotwood has

-A focus on kitbashing and making Verrotwood your own.

-A simple yet robust D10 dice pool system that grows the more strategically you play.

-A very low model count. Each cult is made up of only four models.

-A flexible cult creation system that lets you make the cult you want.

-60+ rituals to personalize how they play.

-AI creatures and special terrain to make every game you play unique.

-A versatile campaign where your cults will battle for power to please their sleeping gods.

Fantastic game! We only played the skirmish part, not the campaign, just so we could try the system out. We did 3 players on a 2x2 and all had a great time! The game was seamless, intuitive and really fun. Not sure where the 'it's not folk horror' comments are coming from, but I found the flavor text, the book design, the terrain and the cult creation all served to drive an immersive folk horror vibe. Great stuff and can't wait to play more.

Hi Mike! It is posible a version without the grey background for printing at home? Thanks! It's a great and funny little game by the way. :-)

Hi Mike Crutchett! First of all: I love the game you create here. In fact has made me get to work transforming miniatures, preparing terrain pieces and writing new scenarios. I don't have Facebook and I wanted to ask you if you plan to create a discord channel for the game. I would like to be able to share experiences with other players, as well as contribute house rules, new creatures, rituals and new scenarios over time :)

Interesting little thing.
The 'folk horror' aspect is kind of missing as only a few of the (optional) creatures and rituals appear to have a 'folk horror' background.

Mork Borgs' "Forbidden Psalm" has more content and theme compared to this.

It does need some kind of index/table for the various rituals.
Why have one for weapons (when there's only a dozen) and not equipment or creatures?
Equipment and creature lists are a bit too basic.

Rules don't state if multiple rituals can be active on a single cultist, but it kind of feels illogical (and more than a bit overpowered) .

Cost is a bit high, but it still is within 'budget range' so it doesn't hurt too much.

Interesting ideas, but poor execution. I didn't really get a sense of the "Folk Horror" I was expecting in the game play and the rulebook is riddled with typos and grammatical errors. Overpriced beta draft that I can't recommend. I hope this gets developed further.

The artwork and the PDF rulebook...simply outstanding. I love the atmospheric feel to the visuals in the rulebook and the game in general. Folk Horror is a fun genre you don't see often. I've got tons of models I'd love to field but can't because I didn't have a game to put them in.. until now! I've read over the rules and it seems very easy to pick up with a small model count of 4. Nice fun games that I would imagine are not too long nor too short. I love the fact that you are encouraged to kit-bash your models and create creepy terrain for your games in Verrotwood. Great facebook community. Super excited for the solo rules to come out. Thanks, Mike, for the great game! Looking forward to all your supplemental material for the Verrotwood. Perfect theme that right up my alley!

I'm keen to know more about this game before I decide to buy it. The couple of blog posts I've found about the game during playtesting are interesting and the theme seems great, but unsure what it sets it apart from all the other skirmish rulesets that are available for free. For example, I'd love to know how "Rituals" work in the game and some examples. Looking forward to reading some reviews or hopefully Mike may release some more info on gameplay.

Verrotwood used a D10 dice pool system. Which is a great way to keep all of your potential bonuses Very simple. Yeah rituals are basically special abilities that your entire cult shares. You perform the rituals by spending ritual points which are determined at the beginning of every match. You can also gain more ritual points by taking pray actions.

The description is highly captivating. Any chance to add a full size preview? Quick preview is useful to see that the book has a nice layout, but having a feel of the actual content might help in the purchase decision.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
