ADMIRAL OF THE FLEET (AOTF) is a fast-play system for naval miniatures wargames focusing on medium to large surface fleet actions during the 1880-1945 period.

Looking for a fast-play but realistic tabletop simulation that combines a unique command/signaling system with combat that is as exciting and unpredictable as naval warfare really was? Bored with just moving ships about the table and doing whatever you want, turn after turn, without a mechanism that realistically reflects the difficulties and rewards inherent in commanding a fleet of ships? Then ADMIRAL OF THE FLEET and its companion publications THE FLAG OFFICER'S HANDBOOK and AOTF SCENARIOS VOLUME I may be just what you are looking for.

Due to the popularity of surface-only engagements and the difficulties inherent in an accurate portrayal of the additional dimensions required by the addition of aircraft and submarines to the game table, AOTF focuses exclusively on surface warfare during the age of the battleship.

RULEBOOK: 59 pages of rules, game charts , damage effects chart, printable move/turn rulers, bibliography, and glossary.  Contents include 1) An Introduction to Signaling, 2) Playing ADMIRAL OF THE FLEET, 3) Pre-Game Preparation, 4) Command Phase, 5) Movement Phase, 6) Combat Phase (Gunfire), 7) Combat Phase (Torpedoes), 8) Damage Phase, and 9) Optional Rules and Variants.  Required to play AOTF.

FLAG OFFICER’S HANDBOOK:50 pages of rules and diagrams plus printable signal card deck (67 cards) and Flag Officer Signal Book sheet.

The FOH explains in detail how the cards can be used to add a new dimension to your naval gaming experience by introducing this innovative method for aspiring flag officers to command their fleet on the game table. Contents include 1) A Brief History of Signaling, 2) Naval Formations, 3) Commanding Your Fleet, 4) Maneuver and Action Signals as well as A) Useful Information for the New Flag Officer, B) Catalogue of Flag Signals, C) Using the Signal Deck with Other Game Systems, and D) Printable Signal Card Deck.

You can signal your divisions, squadrons and flotillas to execute a pre-determined battle order, turn in succession by division, alter course 3 points to starboard, distribute fire from the left, attack the enemy van and even perform a battle turn (Gefechtskehrtwendung)!

Required to play AOTF but can also be used with other naval wargame rules.

SCENARIOS VOLUME I: 66 pages including background information, maps, orders of battle (OOB) and setup diagrams plus 169 pages of pre-formatted, ready-to-print ship logs. Ship Logs are required to play AOTF.

The PDF files are best printed using a laser printer capable of duplex printing and page scaling set to NONE

SIGNAL CARD DECK: Set of 67 coated, professionally-printed, poker-size cards. While a printable version of the card deck is included with the FLAG OFFICER’S HANDBOOK, this printed version is highly recommended. Two decks (one for each commanding admiral) are needed for play.

Dave S:

Two hurricanes in a six-week period really took a toll on my production schedule but after assessing what can be accomplished in the near-term, the revised release dates are:

Naval Annual 1907-1921, December 22, 2022
Naval Annual 1922-1945, mid-February 2023

My apologies for the unanticipated delay and thanks for your patience.

When will the Naval Annuals for 1907-1921 and 1922-1944 be available?

Fighting out WWI and WWII battles were the main reason I bought the rules.

Casey P:

No, AOTF does not address air or submarine operations since it deals specifically with large scale actions involving surface combat as well as how to command your fleet. Comprehensive and realistic rules for air operations can be found in SEEKRIEG 5.

Are there rules for aircraft in this ruleset, and if so are they actually on the table or abstracted like naval thunder?

Gary,

They are separate titles.

The RULEBOOK explains the basics of playing AOTF; using the ship logs, moving the ships, hit determination, damage determination, etc. The FLAG OFFICER'S HANDBOOK is a separate title and describes in detail how to use the cards in the Signal Deck to command your fleet. It includes a printable Signal Deck but we recommend purchasing the pre-printed decks available here on WV (During development and testing, we realized that the signaling system could easily be used with most other naval gaming systems so we opted to publish it as a separate title as opposed to including it as part of the Rulebook).

SCENARIOS VOLUME I is also a separate title and includes background information on each scenario, maps, orders of battle (OOB) and setup diagrams plus 169 pages of pre-formatted, ready-to-print ship logs. Ship Logs are required to play AOTF. The 5 scenarios include: The Battle of Tsushima (1905 - historical), The Battle of Crete (1898 - fictional),...See more

Eddie Carlson (an independent game reviewer) just posted a rather lengthy "out of the box" overview of AOTF on YouTube: https://youtu.be/CUcy1mqD47U

Thanks for pointing that out, Mitchell. I have updated the descriptions with additional detail.

The RULEBOOK explains the basics of playing AOTF; using the ship logs, moving the ships, hit determination, damage determination, etc. However, in addition to serving as a primer for the aspiring tabletop flag officer (by describing formations and maneuvers), the FLAG OFFICER'S HANDBOOK describes in detail how to use the cards in the Signal Cards to command your fleet.

During development and testing, we realized that the signaling system could easily be used with most other naval gaming systems so we opted to publish it as a separate title as opposed to including it as part of the Rulebook.

These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
