Dawn of Iron: The American Civil War at Sea (Bundle)

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Dawn of Iron: The American Civil War at Sea, is a game of naval combat, set during American Civil War (1861-1865). While many think of the war’s naval campaigns as a static blockade, the truth is that it was actually just as desperate and bloody as other aspects of the conflict. From the coastal regions of Virginia and the muddy rivers of the Mississippi Valley to the far flung freezing waters of Alaska’s Bering Strait, Union and Confederate navies fought for dominance.

Dawn of Iron puts you in command of a Civil War-era vessel, or a full squadron of them. Assemble your fleet, engage the enemy, and send them to the bottom!

Dawn of Iron Rulebook

The 24-page Dawn of Iron rulebook includes all the rules you'll need to play in a concise 15-pages with diagrams and illustrations. There's also a few pages dedicated to open sea and coastal battlefields that you will fight on (riverine coming soon!) and four general play missions that should get you sailing in no time!

First Clash - Print-and-Play Components Pack

This bundle also includes First Clash, which is a Print-and-Play Components Pack for Dawn of Iron: The American Civil War at Sea. Inside you will find everything you need to print-and-play a game, including orders cards, cumulative & critical damage decks, tokens, and more.

Does anyone know on what pdf the Depth tokens featured in the rule book are to be found? With regards to solo play currently trying to create a solo version based loosely on Schnell Boats by Joe Carter which uses A4 "battle boards" for combat and tables for Patrols and Encounters.

Any chance of updating the Rulebook with PDF bookmarks? I have no issue creating my own Bookmarks, but the file is Restricted and cannot create own Bookmarks.

I have never played wargames, this looks very exciting!! The research involved and history aspect looks very intriguing.

FYI - it appears the Damage Table in the rulebook is out-of-date, but the one in the Doi-Starter-PNP-Cards pdf is correct and up-to-date. There is an updated Quick Reference Sheet available for download through the Facebook Groups page.

Not at present, but I've got a solitaire engine for the game in the works. Any suggestions and examples of great solo naval games would be appreciated!

Cheers,
Mike

What is the game sequence? Order writing? Simultaneous movement? I usually use local UPS store to get large print files done in color. Not as good down here in E-Town, Ky, but reasonable. The UPS store in Wentzville, Mo was SUPERB! Got a lot of large files printed, even some 22" by 34" files printed inexpensively...the manager was VERY good at customer service!

At the strta of a move players issue orders to each of their ships, using counters on a track. The more nimble ships have a shorter track and therefore act qiocker. These orders generally give a bonus for the ship when using that order but.....a ship is not compelled to use the order given, so it loses out on that bonus.

Play order is determined by scenario where the first player is noted. during the turmn each playernominates one of their ships and acts on it.

It sounds a little off, but once players get the hang of it the game flows really well and does feel like you have a lot a tactical choices especially when and what to do with your ships.

A really nice set of rules with an ever increasing number of ships and scenarios being made available, recommended.

Just picked these up. This is the set Little Wars TV used for their ACW naval game. I printed up some 1/1200 ships and will try them out.

Brown Water Navy Miniatures by MG_Lawson on shapeways has a nice range of 3d printed vessels in 1:600, 1:1000, and 1:1200. And the selection is growing.

Thoroughbred Figures has a very nice range of 1:1200 ironclads but restricted mostly to ironclads and gunboats. Site address is tbfigures.square.site

Then there is also peter pig miniature in 1:1200.

Lastly and my preferred source is Houston ships miniatures on wargamingminiatures.com. He cast to order so it is slower, but they are very nice. He has a very wide selection of ironclads, gunboats, rams, blockade runners, commerce raiders, sloops and frigates, forts, redoubts, and transports. His ships are cast in the 1:1000 range.

Hope that helps.

I can highly recommend East Coast Ironclads (https://www.wargaming3d.com/vendor/eastcoastironclads/) and Long Face Games (https://www.wargamevault.com/browse/pub/6867/Long-Face-Games). Between them most ships currently in the game are covered. Good luck!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
