Old School Western Shootout

Old School Western Shootout

EXE File

Old School Western Shootout is a turn-based strategy computer game where you control a team of combatants engaged in a shootout in the old west. The game uses representational art not far advanced past stick figures - there is no gore.

The first home computer I remember my family having was a Commodore 64. I first learned how to write programs and how to play computer games on that wonderful machine with 64kb of RAM and a ~1 MHZ CPU. Along with the classics like Jumpman and Summer Games, I played an SSI game that simulated western shootouts. That game, Six-Gun Shootout, had rudimentary graphics and sound, and absolutely no blood or gore.

I still have the manual, and am attempting to capture the fun of that game. I am not making a clone or a precise copy, but am very much inspired by that game's interface and the fun I had playing it decades ago in my parents' basement.

Old School Western Shootout comes with ten maps to play, and an editor so you can make your own.  (Every time you run the game, the built-in maps are overwritten, so please do not use those file names for your own works.)

The game runs on Windows.  Security software may flag this as from an unknown publisher, as the installer is generated using a simple Java tool.

For gameplay instructions, look in the file menu under "help".

Version 1.2 Released

I have changed the way messages are displayed, and how sounds are synchronized with the display of the messages. I hope you will find this to be an improvement.

Version 1.1 Released

Two small changes: I have updated the game to display damage on the main panel, and slightly increased the delay messages are shown from 2.5 seconds to 3 seconds. I hope this makes the action a little clearer. Thanks for the feedback, Christopher.

It's hard to tell who did what. Can I slow the text or look back on it? Is there a way to tell who is who without mousing over?

Hi Christopher. Thanks for buying my game, and thank you for the feedback. I'll work on improving those things for you.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
