Five Parsecs From Home is an rpg-lite solo adventure wargame where you assemble a ragtag crew of galactic trailblazers and head out to explore the stars, pick up jobs, and every now and then —  engage in some action-packed, sci-fi combat!

Battles are procedurally generated with huge combinations of enemies, weapons, battlefield circumstances and objectives whether fighting rivals or carrying out jobs.

With each encounter you earn experience and loot, progressing your crew and story as you send your crew to look for contacts, trade, explore the colony, recruit replacements or train up their skills.

The game is playable with any miniatures you have on hand and requires only a small number to get started, making it ideal for both experienced and new science fiction gamers. All you need is a few six-sided dice and a couple of ten-sided dice.

  • 184 page PDF packed full of full-colour art
  • A fast-moving system, built for solo gaming from the ground up.
  • RPG-lite adventure wargame experience with miniatures.
  • Create a wide range of characters whether human, alien or robot.*
  • Miniatures agnostic - use whatever you have
  • After each battle, your crew may die from their injuries or level up and find new items and information.
  • Upgrade your starship with expansion modules *
  • Procedurally generate a huge array of possible missions, with more than 50 enemy types.
  • Random tables for towns, trade, character events and starship travel.
  • 5 difficulty settings and super-hard Black and Red Zone jobs*
  • Extensive options for Game Mastering scenarios, allowing complex RPG-like campaigns to be played with connected scenario plots, environmental hazards and factional conflict.*
  • 7 stage narrative solo campaign*

This is a full retail edition of the community favourite solo sci-fi wargame by Ivan Sorensen of Nordic Weasel games and comes with lots of new content (noted with a * above), full graphic layout design and lots of stunning full-colour art throughout.

Not sure if this has already been asked and answered, but is there a way to play this without miniatures? Would it be hard to adapt to hexes or grids? I know, I’m a heathen, no need to bring that up. :)

The latest expansion (Freelancer's Handbook) provides rules for no-minis combat resolution in addition to many other excellent rules that can be optionally applied. The core rulebook covers grid-based movement and it's an easy swap. No judgment here... the game is quite flexible and you should take advantage.

Also in the core rulebook there are rules for playing on a grid. I play on Foundry VTT using the grid rules.

Hello, I’ve had a good read through and am really looking forward to playing some games; I just wanted to check that I hadn’t missed/mid-read something.

It says in the character creation section that the maximum value for the combat skill is +5. Does this mean, assuming one of my crew members survives long enough to reach this level, that they would be auto hitting on every shot as to hit is a D6 plus combat skill and there doesn’t seem to be any negative modifiers that could take them below a score of 6?

Cheers,
Alex

I have no complaints with the game itself, or the presentation. It's my favorite current game, and the PDF layout and art is beautiful. A++

The bookmarks, notsomuch. There are missing bookmarks, some out of order. I will not list them all here, because I'm not an employee, but for a $20 PDF I would expect better. I'm going to give it five stars anyway because it's a great product, but can someone please fix and improve the bookmarks for future customers? I've already fixed my copy.

Thank you, and keep up the great work.

Hi, I have the first and 2nd edition Five Parsecs. Also Every Star an oportunity. Do you think I should have this 3rd edition? I do not care too much on the art but I do on the rules per se. I would appreciate any owners advice. Btw, in my country right now, 20 dollars is rather a lot of money for a pdf book, but if I have to, I will buy it no doubt. I love the series.

I don't have the previous editions of Five Parsecs, but I do have the 2nd edition of Five Leagues.
Comparing this with it, which I'm assuming used a similar layout and design, I'd have to say that as a new player, the layout in 3rd edition Five Parsecs was a lot easier to learn from. Everything is structured to flow smoothly through a campaign turn, and you make your characters first thing so you jump in and get your hands dirty pretty quick.
It plays to its strengths, because it's definitely the type of game that's best learned by doing.

However... since you already have the 1st and 2nd editions, you're definitely not a new player, so the new layout won't benefit you as much, but it can still help keep things flowing well.
It can be a bit easier for me to find what I'm looking for in it than in Five Leagues, because of how it's organized.

I think that if you really like Five Parsecs, you're going to end up getting it eventually. I understand that it does add some new...See more

So how's that "US Shipping at the end of May" coming along? I really would like to buy the book+PDF but can't justify a shipping cost nearly equal to the price of the book! Eager to hear!

Ooof. August? The PDF is $20 and it's thrown in free with the hardcover (which I want more than a pdf) - but then the shipping is as much as the book itself for me. Ouch. I get the delay but that's after summer is done and game time with my fam plummets. :(

Great game but needs a Print on Demand option.

$20 is a bit steep for a pdf, but I overlooked that because of everything I saw in the reviews.
I don't regret getting it. The game is amazing.

However, already spending $20 for the pdf makes me come to a hard stop on buying the physical copy, which would cost me another $69.

Here's hoping for a cheaper print alternative.

See my review for more info.

Lee, nice review. I am not associated with Modiphius in any way but I am mildly confident if you send them an email they may offer a discount given you purchased the PDF here. Fingers crossed. I like you, read and watched enthusiastic reviews and decided I wanted it. Buying direct from Modiphius gets you the pdf for free but with shipping that was just shy of $100 AUD. I am fortunate though as I could preorder it from my local bits and mortar store for $55 and considered buying the PDF here for $26 as that was better value. But Modiphius is part of the bits and mortar program so I reached out to them, sent a copy of my receipt, and they sent me the PDF for no cost! I was stoked. $55 for the physical copy and pdf is a steal IMHO. $80 odd is towards the steep end but it looks like a great game so most likely worth it. Need to play it first to confirm. Think I'm going to love the stories generated each campaign turn as I roll on all those tables.

Must be a character limit on replies ...
Wanted to add rolling up my first crew alone was a ton of fun. A name generator would be a boon here ... For PCs, patrons, rivals, and planet generation ...
Good luck! And happy gaming!!

Thanks, Damien.
Character creation is fun. And a snap to do! :-)

I may wait for it to show up on Amazon. I get free shipping there, so that'll take some of the sting out.

For a name generator, I'd recommend Donjon's site. Another great resource is Inspiration Pad Pro, available here on DTRPG for free.
It took a fair bit of work, but I made a 1950s pulp name generator using a list of popular names from that time.

I was a bit worried during my first session, when two of my heroes were taken out. But they both lived to see another day. I do like that small bit of tension of not knowing who survived. It makes you want to be extra cautious.

I think once I get the game down, it wouldn't be too hard to expand the game with some trade ideas from Traveller, too.

So far, I've adopted a space map I put together for White Star over to it. It's from GURPS Space. I added jump points between the systems, as I played a lot of X3: Terran Conflict....See more

I purchased this last week and I'm in love with the game. The one thing it desperately needs, in my opinion, is a printer friendly version. Even one that just strips out the photos would be good. My printer is lousy with pictures so my print is unpleasant to look at and difficult to read.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
