PANZERSCHRECK #18 (Winter 2021) is a wargames magazine that contains three solitaire, complete games in this 94-page full-color issue, in addition to game reviews, interviews, variants, and general articles.  CHARGE OF THE LIGHT BRIGADE (tactical level Crimean War, 1854), GUNFIGHT AT OK CORRAL (man-to-man game about the most famous gunfight of the Old West, 1881), and FALL OF ROHM, 2nd ed. (abstract political simulation of pre-war Germany, 1934).  All three stress high playability along with solid historicity.

CHARGE OF THE LIGHT BRIGADE is a solitaire tactical game covering the famous charge during the Crimean War, 1854 (11 pages of rules, 6"x9" map, 30 counters), with standard rules, and four scenarios, game tables, and Designer's Notes.  Rosters provided for 4th Light Dragoons, 13th Light Dragoons, 8th Hussars, 11th Hussars, 17th Lancers to record casualties, plus leaders such as Cardigan, Nolan, Lucan, and Raglan.  The game allows you to witness the “ride of the 600”… All you need is a deck of playing cards and a six-sided die. Optional rules provide elements of strategy that are lacking in the standard game; in the historical scenario, yours is not to strategize or “reason why”, but to “do and die.”

GUNFIGHT AT OK CORRAL simulates the most famous gunfight in the Old West, when  the Earp brothers and Doc Holliday dispatched the Clanton-McLaury gang in Tombstone, Arizona Territory, in 1881. The solo game allows you stand in the boots of the participants (you play the lawmen, the system handles the outlaws) during this “30 shots in 30 seconds” encounter in history.  The individual men are rated in variety of categories (gun speed, accuracy, experience, etc.) so the stage is set as you walk shoulder-to-shoulder down Fremont Street… toward destiny.  10 pages of rules, 27 counters & markers, game tables, optional rules, Designer's Notes.

FALL OF ROHM, 2nd ed. is an abstract solitaire game depicting this turbulent time in
German political history prior to the Second World War. The player—in the role of National Socialist party leadership—must secure a smooth transition to power when Hindenburg dies. Usually, this means effectively dealing with Röhm and the SA, thus satisfying the Army and winning a path for succession. This updated and revised second edition has 13 pages of rules, small map display, six counters, game tables, optional rules, four scenarios, Designer's Notes.

WARGAME CONTENT. In addition to the games, this issue has several game reviews, classic reprinted interviews (with Richard Berg, Don Greenwood, Dana Lombardy, John Hill), variants, and articles of interest to board wargamers.  Game reviews (Game Review Editor: Robert G. "Smitty" Smith) include Campaigns of Montrose (Decision), Roll for Omaha, 1944 (Patterson), Sea Kings (Worthington), 1066 (Hall), Custer's Last Stand (Worthington), Robin Hood (Worthington), Rampage (Decision), Santa Cruz 1797 (Bellica), To the South (War Drum), and Less Than 60 Miles (TRL). All game components and rules are provided in the pages of the magazine.

PANZERSCHRECK #18 is another edition standing in the long line of issues of this award-winning magazine, providing in Minden fashion wargames that are not only authentic but highly playable.  PANZERSCHRECK aims to capture the spirit of the golden age of wargaming, providing you with old-fashioned wargame fun.  We're very pleased with this edition and are confident that you will be as well. Editor & Game Designer:  Gary Graber.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
