Tsushima, 1905 2nd ed.

TSUSHIMA, 1905, 2nd ed. is a tactical naval wargame rules system set in the pre-dreadnought (1890-1906) era.  Individual warships (presented on counters at 1/4200 scale) are rated in a variety of offensive and defensive categories. Scenarios recreate the Battle of Tsushima between the Russian and Japanese fleets in 1905, as well as other actual or hypothetical actions.  Tsushima, 1905 is a complete game that simulates naval combat in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, using a slightly modified Battleship Captain 3rd ed. system.

Warships (battleships, armored cruisers, protected cruisers, destroyers, and torpedo boats) from several nations are provided:  Russia, Japan, Great Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Austria, Spain, Sweden, the United States, and the Netherlands.  Playability and historicity are emphasized, with small or large battles playable to completion in an evening.  Each game turn represents 10 minutes, and one inch on your floor or tabletop represents 500 yards.

Standard, advanced, and optional rules are included in the 122-page illustrated rule book, along with game tables, over 320 rated ship counters (B, AC, C types), several dozen DD/TB counters, designer's notes and historical commentary.  This is a complete rules system, and does not require anything else (apart from dice and playing space) to play.

Also included at no additional charge is the TSUSHIMA, 1905 2nd ed. SHIP SET, which has all the ships, game markers, and reference cards presented in a convenient format.

In designing this 2nd ed., we completed a review of all ship ratings (from Battleship Captain 3rd ed.) to provide the best, most up-to-date ratings for all ships in the system. We've also made a number of small tweaks to some of the pre-dreadnought tables, to better emphasize the unique qualities of this period. Those who own Battleship Captain 3rd ed. and simply want the new ship counters may purchase the Tsushima, 1905 2nd ed. Ship Set separately. (See its listing here at Wargame Vault.)

TSUSHIMA, 1905 2nd ed. (which includes the above-mentioned Ship Set) is now available in PDF format.  Designer: Gary Graber.  Publisher: Minden Games.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
