DER TAG, 1916 is a solitaire, strategic level game covering the North Sea campaign of World War I between the fleets of Great Britain and Germany set during the pivotal year of 1916. The player takes the British, and the game system handles the German side (optional rules allow you to reverse roles if desired).  It is an “experience” game, where the player sets his broad strategy, then watches events and battles unfold.

The game does not posit that Jutland must happen.  Rather, it allows for varied German activity by their High Seas Fleet (Raid, Tip & Run, Ambush, etc.) represented by Action Cards for the turn.  Some turns may have No Action at all, some might involve a Bombardment of the English coast, with the British Grand Fleet--based in four main anchorages of Scapa Flow, Cromarty, Rosyth, and Dover--making appropriate responses.  If Der Tag ("The Day") occurs, the Germans come out with every ship available, as what happened with Jutland, and the fate of the entire war would hang in the balance.

Ship combat is resolved by a simple process which, while remaining authentic, makes even large battles resolvable within a matter of minutes.  Ships on both sides are differentiated by type (2nd generation dreadnought battleship, dreadnought battleship, battlecruiser, pre-dreadnought battleship, and armored cruiser), with named counters provided for each. The combat rules are adaptable and may be used on their own (in this and in other games you may own), but that is not their primary purpose, as they paint with a broad brush. Alternatively, you may use your favorite set of tactical rules to resolve battles that occur in Der Tag, 1916.  The focus of this game is on the strategic picture.

DER TAG, 1916 includes 23 page instructions containing standard and optional rules, set of Action Cards, set of ship counters (60 British, 34 German), small game map, game tables, and Designer's Notes.  Also included in this edition is a page of Blank Ship counters (for design-your-own efforts), and Additional Game Notes and design rationales.  Apart from these, this edition is identical to the edition contained in Panzerschreck #17 magazine.

DER TAG, 1916 explores the North Sea campaign from a strategic vantage point, and will appeal to gamers who want a game that can be played to completion in an evening.  It is available in PDF format.  Publisher: Minden Games. Designer:  Gary Graber.

I have posted a review of this game on the listing for Panzerschreck #17, which is how i acquired mine. It is a fine game, providing a lot of solo action in a short time.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
