Heirs of Empire: Wars of the Diadochi

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Heirs to Empire: Wars of the Diadochi is a scale and model agnostic mass battle game set during the wars to divide Alexander's empire between his successors.  It is a period of roughly 40 years of conflict.  It features big battles, small skirmishes, political intrigue, alliances, betrayal, and everything tha can make a historical wargame great!

Heirs to Empire uses an expanded system made popular in Osprey's Men of Bronze in the Osprey Wargaming Series.  Therefore, it is scale and model agnostic.  The mechanics have been tweaked ot help reflect the large scale battles common in this period.  It evolves to allow players to use armies that fit the scale of combat in the Diadochi Wars.  In addition, it has an expanded campaign system and a streamlined set of Scenarios.  Finally, it establishes the unique armies and units of Diadochi armies.

Enjoy your games battling rival Diadochi!

Can you describe the differences and expansions from “Men of Bronze”? I thought was a really fun, if slightly underdevelopment, fast play set of rules to cover Hellenic Warfare from approximately the Persian Wars through Gaugamela. “Conquest! Rome in Italy” expands this rules system to include Roman warfare prior to the Punic Wars including the Pyrrhic Invasion. The system focuses on the ‘big picture’ of ancient Classical Warfare with clever ideas about supporting units in melee and the practical differences between phalanx, legion, non-phalanx infantry, warband, missile units, skirmishers and cavalry.

I wish that some of the concepts had been a bit more polished: What exactly is a Base Width for purposes for moment? I think a Base Width refers to the individual soldiers in a unit, and not the phalanx, warband or peltast as a group; but I am not certain. Also, do units supporting a melee remain fixed in the combat until either side routs? The Macedonians really need rules for Companion...See more

Thanks!

Here is the big differences with Heirs and Men of Bronze. The CORE combat mechanics are very similar. However, the rules expand the idea that Hellenistic armies were much larger than traditional Greek Hoplite or Early Roman troops. Therefore, armies are broken down into Left, Center, and Right wings. Each wing has their own Commander's Gaze points and work as their own mini-armies. You need to have these different wings and units work together to achieve victory.

The game also is a higher level tactical combined arms game. Formations are assumed and not detailed. Therefore, you can focus more on using cavalry, infantry, and support troops working together. Smaller tweaks are charges, limited mobility, new special rules, Measurement Units instead of base widths, new army lists, expanded Hellenistic history, etc.

Finally, the rules also include Campaign rules to link battles together into a larger campaign, including multi-player campaigns. There are...See more

Thanks for your reply. I have already purchased these rules along with at least three hard copies of “Men of Bronze” and a Google Play Books pdf of that Osprey product. I also eagerly await your next Osprey rules set focusing on wargaming battles between Rome and its enemies.

Unfortunately, I have not fully read “Heirs to Empire,” but they do look very interesting. Why couldn’t these rules allow us to game Alexander’s career? I think you would need to rate Hypaspists as a unit, and have some rules to simulate the Persian duel melee/missile units such as the Sparabara and Immortals. You have already supported “Men of Bronze” extensively by providing new Army Lists with interesting historical insight into their battles. Dare we hope for some of the same for “Heirs of Empire”?

Thanks for the new Army List on your “Blood and Spectacles” blog! This new force really expands the possibilities with these “Heirs of Empire: Wars of the Diadochi” rules. I hope to try a battle between the Seleucids and Mauryans over the Holidays.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
