Horizon Wars: Zero Dark

The Earth lies in ruins. The asteroid, Ammit, has shattered the towers of its gleaming city-states and, from the colonies of Mars and Venus, rescue teams rush to understand how the disaster could have befallen the homeworld. But in the ruins they discover an even greater mystery: almost ninety percent of the world's population is missing.

Now there is a gold rush to secure Earth's technology and resources for the competing powers of the colonies even as the atmosphere is choked with ash and ancient secrets rise to the surface.

This miniatures agnostic hard(ish) sci-fi skirmish game is part of the Horizon Wars series. Assemble a team of special forces heroes, recruit allies and equip them with the tools they need to survive. Take on a friend, face-to-face; or fight alone or together against the unpredictable and deadly Red Force in solo mode.

Horizon Wars: Zero Dark is a platinum bestseller on Wargame Vault with a full set of 5-star reviews. Find out what makes this one of the most innovative and compelling skirmish games on the market for yourself!

If I were to get a physical copy, will it include all the latest rules from Errata v1.1 or newer?

No it’s a different game set in the same universe. The original Horizon Wars was a 6-10mm game with Mechs, tanks etc. Horizon Wars: Zero Dark is a 28mm (15 to 32mm) skirmish game with players controlling small teams and an A.I. controlled Red Force. There’s also a third game in the series, Horizon Wars: Infinite Dark that’s starship combat game.

There is a versus mode with several different symmetrical missions, that pits 1:1 and the AI controlled „Red Force“. So technically there is a third player present.

IMO you could easily adapt the system and also:

The teams of heroes (usually up to 4) can be controlled by several players on one side, too. So you could go with 3 heroes and fight the AI controlled Red Force, or build teams, or, ...

In a way. The game is designed to be played solo, co-op or PvP. You can easily play it with three player co-op, with each player controlling one or more heroes. You can also play TvT, with two players sharing a team on one side.

In terms of having three teams simultaneously... The game doesn't explicitly support that kind of play.

Could this be adapted to the Star Wars world? I am looking to repurpose my Imperial Assault minis and this seems like it could be the game. I like small “outer rim” missions as opposed to the typical battles legion offers. Thanks.

Definitely, although there are no rules for the Force. One of my patrons is doing exactly this.

I'm currently working on some rules to adapt the game to internal spaces with a grid layout, which would also give you more utility for your IA tiles, too.

I ordered this as a result of reading the review in Miniature Wargames, which often looks at niche publications that tend to be overlooked elsewhere, and, better still, gives more than a cursory description that is little more than a 'heads up'. The editor, John Treadaway, is very well versed in SF gaming, and his thoughtful comments - clearly based on some study of the book, convinced me to give it a try. I've yet to read more than the opening pages, but am impressed by the quality of production, and look forward to giving it serious attention when time and other projects allow.

Thanks, Andrew! I'm talking to John about ZD having a couple of feature articles in the magazine in the near future, including an exclusive mission. As I had to teach myself layout and desktop publishing from scratch to make the book, I'm particularly pleased that you like the layout.

Yes - the rules cover 28/32mm and 15mm with the units of measurement and base sizes being the only differences I can think of off the top of my head.

Precinct Omega Publishing has a fairly active Facebook page, probably could ask over there for the best answer.

No, this is a separate game. Similar mechanics, different scale and operation level.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
