The Napoleonic Wars are in full swing...

The familiar sight of long lines of scarlet-coated British infantry advance on their enemies, ready to shatter them with their disciplined volleys...

But wait.  The opposing soldiers are in line, not an attack column.  Some of them wear grey, not blue, and they speak English, albeit with a strange accent.

French-speaking troops are on the British side, decked in distinctive "habitant" dress.  On the flanks, buckskin-clad frontiersmen face off against painted Natives, both using tomahawks and scalping knives rather than bayonets.

These are not the ordered fields of Europe.  This is the wooded wilderness of North America, where artillery pieces are a rarity and cavalry almost non-existent.  Welcome to the Anglo-American war of 1812.  It's Napoleonics, but not as you know it...

A complete ruleset for recreating the War of 1812 on land in miniature, "Whuppin' Jonathon" allows you to refight the small-scale but desperate battles that saved Canada and established the United States as a respected world power.

Use of d10 dice exclusively.

Rules for infantry, cavalry, guns, howitzers, and rockets.  Sample battle to illustrate the game - the battle of Frenchtown.  Includes an easy to follow ready reference sheet.

NOTE: this is the British version of the rules, featuring British spelling, priority and set for download in A4 format.  The American version is "Whuppin' John Bull", which you can find at

Just played them to the best of my understanding.
Found the ability to "Dress ranks" makes for a very long game.
Also what is the consequence of Normal muskets firing at extended range ??

Rules look very promising. At the very least an excellent history lesson on the War of 1812 (based on a quick read through) that includes a lot of historical context and quick biographies of some of the participants.

Need to offer a "Canadian" version besides the British and American versions. American version has "American" spelling on letter size paper. British version has "English" spelling on A4 paper. "Canadian" version should be proper "Queens English" on letter sized paper. (in other words the best of British and American versions - eh !)

Tickled that the sample battle in the rule book was Malcolm's Mills and the skirmish at Brant's ford on the Grand River. Both of which occurred only a few KM from my home. US raiders would have passed across my property near the banks of the Grand on their way to these fights. Very thorough description of the historical events and detailed description of how the rules are used to re-fight...See more

Michael O; thanks for the review. So as a Canadian would you recommend the British version or is the American preferred because of the paper size?

Also, what is the figure ratio for the larger non skirmish battles?

Lastly, can you give a rough comparison to Napoleonic rules such as General de Brigade or Regimental Fire and Fury?

Thanks in advance.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
