The Way of the Warrior - WWII

ADD TO WISHLIST >

The Way of the Warrior (WoTW) is a solo system to simulate small tactical war operations during World War II; you will be in charge of an infantry squad during a series of missions: you can play a single mission or a campaign game where you'll be able to improve the skills of your soldiers (while facing the inevitable losses).

This completely redesigned edition of WotW provides you two options to play the game:

  • Portable game: just print a few paper sheets and take your pencil and one die; no components to prepare and a very limited space required on your table.
  • Table Top game: play the game using counters (230+), cards (100+) and a playmat
A Vassal module is now included to play digitally the Table Top version of the game, with full automation to create the decks and start a new Mission in zero seconds.

Both options share the same common set of rules and provide the same content, but on a different format; you can of course mix the two options, for example using the Table Top version at home and continuing your camapign with the Portable version while traveling.

The game covers the European Theatre of Operations, allowing you to lead the forces of one of eight possible armies: Commonwealth, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, USA, USSR or Poland.

The terrain for each mission is generated on the basis of the selected theatre of operation, including: Central and Eastern Europe (general)

  • Winter War (Finland, Russia)
  • Normandy
  • Beach head

Additional rules for Airdrop missions are also available: with 25 different objectives, WoTW provides a great choice of tactical challenges.

Played one mission and I found some of the rules to be a bit vague. In most cases I was able to make a judgement call but one thing that kept bothering me is DRM+1 if target is pinned. Because you choose your target randomly you usually don't know before rolling to hit if the target is pinned or not. Does that apply only if the whole group is pinned?

Great little game with more decision making and scenarios than Rifle in the Ardennes. If playing the Campaign game, there are tough decisions to make if one should abort the mission or keep going in the hope of maximizing points. The Air Drop prelude is a great addition. Having both a tabletop and portable version is a bonus. Great work Gottardo.

To All...Gottardo answered my questions and fixed the issue within 12 hours!!!! He has set a service that many strive for but seldom reach. Great work. This purchase is well worth the price and is an outstanding bargain. Plus, it's fun to play. I suggest playing the portable and moving onto the table top once you see how the system works. Thanks for a superb game.

Excellent game, I concur with William C's comments. However, I have a few questions.
1. Can you better explain the Ambush trait? Do the enemy fire before you? Move before you? It seems to be missing a better explanation.
2. Several patrols have 9+ Patrol, 8+ Patrol, etc. Do you roll the number or higher to activate enemy patrol?
Finally, in the download for the Table Top Components, I cannot open the downloads for (1) the example of play for the table top game and (2) the play area. All the others open without problem. Please correct this issue.

Hi Larry: first of all thanks for the support.
1) Ambush trait clarification. When you encounter an Enemy with this Trait, your units will skip the next Team Activation segment since they have been ambushed by the enemy. Since the combat sequence is composed of:
• Team Activation
• Enemy Activation
• Rout Check
This means that the enemy will be able to fire/move before you. I will clarify this trait in the next version of the rules.
2) Obstacles include strings like 9+ Patrol: this means that the Patrol is placed on the field only if roll (2d6) this number or higher.

I've just re-uplodaded the Table Top Components file that should fix the problem: let ne me know if the problem still remain.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
