So you can pick which version of my D-Day & Cotentin map, this FREE booklet details the D-Day Map's grid options (hexes/squares/no grid) & size of the grid hexes/squares (600 meters, 1/2-mile, 1 km, 2.5 kms, 6 kms) and how it was drawn in hundreds of hours over years with lots of features.

Make a custom Game Design to refight Operation Overlord!

This super detailed map is based on a Michelin 1947 road map of Normandy (which was sold to returning veterans) with 3 levels of roads, town blocks & names, rivers, beaches (low & high tide lines), gridded hexes or squares PLUS tons of info added: 20-meter contour levels, with capital ship anchorages (new in this edition!), naval gun fire range limits, forts, forests, swamps, drop/beach zones, bocage areas.

the map itself is identical in all versions—the only variation is the shape of the grid and the size of the grid cells. Or buy just the map with NO GRID, and you can add your own grid(s) perhaps.

How big is it? If you get the 600-meter-wide version and enlarge the hexes to the normal wargame-standard 5/8" hexes, then the full map would be just over 5x12.5 FEET in size. I assume that many gamers will print (or email)

  • portions for a campaign series of games,
  • most the area but smaller than 5x12' for a big-scale game as is shown on Little Wars TV
  • open to the right area in a tablet/laptop as a guide in designing game table terrain.

The map's actual size is 36.666" high by 90" wide and can be reduced or enlarged. When enlarged, the detail will not get grainy/fuzzy because it was drawn with "vectors" in Adobe Illustrator. The 3-4 Megabyte map file comes as a PDF which can be opened in the free program Adobe Acrobat Reader.

How detailed is it? There's one HUNDRED times as much land area mapped as shown on the booklet cover image on this webpage. (The cover image shows the Sword to Pegasus Bridge part.)

How much of the Normandy campaign is covered? All of June and most of July; this booklet shows exactly the extents of the front.

This little booklet gives suggestions of how to print portions or the whole map for your game designs and campaigns. Plus, how to contact me if you have suggestions for a new version/grid scale etc.

This digital PDF edition has more features and utility than my preprinted sections that I have sold hundreds of over the years. Bookmarks allow you to easily move around on the PDF map while zoomed in. Less expensive and more flexible than buying my preprinted versions.

This free booklet has 36 small pages for viewing on a smart phone or can be viewed on a computer screen with 2 pages, side by side, or printed with 4 small pages per printed sheet.

You have questions, we have answers in this little booklet.

Thanks for your interest in my unique project.

Bill Owen, Game Design (co-founder of Judges Guild)

PS if you do not want to take the time to browse through this free booklet but still unsure what grid/size to buy, I suggest the following:

  • Skirmish gamers might prefer either the 1/2 mile per square grid or 600 meters per hex grid.
  • Rommel players 2.5 km square grid.
  • Otherwise, an all-around choice would be 1 kilometer (or 1 mile) per square.
  • Even if you don't need a grid for pre-game map movement, a square grid might help you layout your terrain. The No Grid version is mainly for those who can add a grid through a Desktop Publishing program.

Someone asked if the Watermark is subtle. I just figured out that I could buy my own map (duh!) and so checked the Watermark he asked about.

Turns out that it's so small (on a huge map) and over tight against the lower left corner (where there's just seawater) that I didn't even notice it at first until really looking harder. Plus it's thin black print with a thin white outline.

As best as I can estimate the watermark is 10 point type on a 90" wide document! Barely legible at 100% or 125% depending on your computer screen. And only if you are over there looking for submarines. :)

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
