The New Zealand Wars; The Waikato Wars and Campaign Rules

This publication is to help wargames with the New Zealand Wars especially with the Waikato War that started in 1863.

It gives you not only a set of rules for skirmish wargming the invasion of the Waikato, but also a set of wargaming rules for a campaign in that period that could be modified for all periods during the New Zealand Wars 1845-1872.

Skirmish Rules

These rules are best used with either 15mm or 28mm figures for wargames. The Skirmish Rules  are simple, and driven by modifiers with movement, firing, melee and morale used to represent the flavor of the particular time of the New Zealand Wars.

Waikato Wars Campaign Rules

These rules can help you construct a campaign for the Waikato Wars 1863-64, but also can be modified for the other periods as well.

Scenarios;

  • Ambush at Martin's Farm, 17th July 1863
  • Battle of Koheroa Hills, 17th July 1863

The intention of this series is to bring the New Zealand Wars on the battlefield Table.

Future Proposed titles in the series;

WP01 The New Zealand Wars - Skirmish & Campaign Rules; The Waikato War (above)

WP02 The New Zealand Wars - War in the East 1866; Hauhau Hawkes Bay Campaign

WP03 The New Zealand Wars - War in the Fern and Tussock; Te Kooti's Taupo Campaign 1869 (COMING SOON)

Can you tell us a little bit about the rules? What units are covered? how are the differences between the factions represented? what are the game mechanics like? are Pā and fortifications represented?
Thanks

Hi Tom

Thanks for your questions.

The units covered are British and colonial forces and include the following;
(British) Regulars, Naval, Royal Artillery
(Colonial) Militia, Volunteers, Forest Rangers, Mounted Volunteers, Settlers, Kupapa
(Maori) Kingi-tanga (Maori King Forces)

With this first one we have tried to keep it very much around the Waikato War and used the modifiers to represent the units of that time in terms of morale and firing ability.
In future titles we will add to these to represent the change in forces (e.g; self reliant policy by Colonial forces towards end of war).

Game mechanics - Game play is simple, and driven by modifiers with movement, firing, melee and morale used to represent the flavor of the particular time of the New Zealand Wars.

Units that consist of 10 figures include British Regulars, Naval and Kingi-tanga
Colonial units consist of 8 figures while mounted troops on both sides are...See more

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
