A Call to Arms: Star Fleet, Book Two

Watermarked PDF

“Here we lay our web. Here we stand between our enemy and all we hold dear. Live or die, here we fight.”

This is the much anticipated A Call to Arms: Star Fleet, Book 2. There are more ships for empires you enjoyed in Book 1.2: Federation, Klingons, Romulans, Kzintis, and Gorns. The Orion Pirates and Tholians that were introduced in Book 1.2 now have full-scale fleets you can use. In addition, the Seltorians, deadly foes of the Tholians, are introduced and have a powerful fleet to hunt the Tholians down. There are monsters for your fleets to defeat – the huge Juggernaut, the Planet Killer which breaks down planets for fuel and doesn’t care if the worlds are inhabited or not, the Moray Eel of Space which eats ships, and the Sun Snake which makes stars go nova. There are more civilian bases and ships to protect and a few ships that are sheepdogs in sheep’s clothing. And there is a preview of WYN ships.

New types of ships include scouts to help you in your battles and commando ships to deliver troops to a planet or board an enemy’s ship. New terrain includes the WYN Radiation Zone. New weapons, new traits, and new special actions flesh out this book. There are lots of new scenarios that should test your wit and skills. There are templates to construct your own Tholian webs.  (Web panels are also available on our shop on Shapeways.) There is information on making your own planets and a how-to guide on painting Orion Pirate ships. Finally there is a consolidated index to both Book 1.2 and Book 2.

Book Two has all the rules and information you need to play the game when combined with Book 1.2. Please note that you must have Book 1.2 to play this game. Book Two is an expansion.

Not easily. All of the ships have 90-degree firing arcs and 90-degree shields. Converting this game to 60 degree arcs would be very time consuming.

If you really want hexes, this game is a conversion of the Federation Commander system to the ACTA system.
Everything in Federation Commander is hex based... movement, firing arcs, shields, etc.
You might wish to take a look at that game.

Can this game be converted to play on hexes?

I bought this file and downloaded it but it is only 9 MB. The page claims the file size is 26.37 MB. Is the 26.37 MB figure incorrect? Or is there a problem with the download? Or the file itself?

I just downloaded it myself and you are right, it is only 9 MB after download. I suspect One Bookshelf compresses the file that you download. Everything is indeed there in the 9 MB file.

That is correct. We offer the rulebooks at full price whether in print or PDF. We still must pay the author and royalties on it, so cannot discount it.

Really keen to get this one, but I'm also eager for the print on demand option.

Thanks for letting me know. I'll keep and eye out for it there.

Great work by the way with ACTA Starfleet. Its one of my favorite games.

Will there be a 'print on demand' option for this book?

We plan on offering a print version in about three months, depending on feedback demanding more explanations or corrections. We want this to be the best book possible and it is easier to fix a PDF than a print book.

Been over a year since mentioning the possibility for a print. Any new word? I own the PDF but would much prefer a hardcopy too which I find more convenient.

It is still on the list of things to happen. We have some more clarifications from Tony to add and it should be done. We didn't want to release the print version and have there be something else that lots of folks had questions about and needed to be clarified/explained.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
