Welcome to the edge of civilization, where brigands rule and where the shadows are long.

In tiny villages, people huddle in fear as terrors prowl the night.

Out here, your word is as good as your sword and nobody will miss you.

Five Leagues From the Borderlands is a set of solo miniatures rules for fantasy campaign games.

Taking inspiration from gritty "medieval-fantasy" like The Black Company and Harn, this is a world of brutal combat and ever-present danger.

With a handful of miniature figures, your dice and these rules, you can adventure in the war-torn Borderlands, fight tactical battles against evil and maybe even  get a few coins in the process.

Your characters will advance as you go along, find loot and might even make it to the end.

Five Leagues is a descendent of the Five Parsecs series of games, offering a game experience written specifically for Solo Players:

That means that all the mechanics you need are built right into the rules, instead of being an afterthought stuffed in the back of the book.

We've aimed to make the mechanics simple and straight-forward, to make it easier and quicker to play on your own.

And the adventure and encounter tables will do pretty much all the set-up for you, allowing you to just sit down with your dice and have an adventure.

* * *

Please be advised this is a tactical game: You will need miniatures, tokens, markers or something else to represent your characters in combat.

A typical battle will have 8-10 figures on each side.

You get a full campaign game to play through, tackling different threats and watching your story unfold.

What is new in this Second Edition?

A LOT!

The new version has been polished and improved, tidying up the rules, getting rid of excessive dice rolling and improving the pacing of the campaign game.

In addition we’ve added:

Difficulty settings for players who want more or less challenge.

An Unusual background table for your characters.

Monsters from ogres to dragons. And a random monster generator.

Village events.

Encounters are far more varied: Enemy strengths and flaws, leadership figures, unusual battle conditions (from fighting in the rain to haunted terrain) and each type of Threat now has its own unique encounter table.
Many enemies also have special rules now, to make them more unique.

Multiple options for tailoring a long term campaign, such as “new game plus” options and large-scale campaign events such as holy crusades, rat-men invasions or the literal end of days!

Tons of new items to find, including magical weapons, potions and scrolls.

And much MUCH more.

To what extent is this playable as a coop and how would you do it?

For the moment, just split the war band. The standard war band is 8 characters, so if you play with a friend, each of you controls 4 of them.

Since the war band gets 2 actions in town each turn, just take 1 each (or argue about what to do, that's fine too :) )

Love '5 Leagues' and all the expansions, so excited to see the new edition.
Bought them not long ago, so wondered will there be a bundle deal once the expansions are updated to 2E?

You will want to print out the 2nd ed. if you have the first. I have both, and the second is twice as long. There really isn't (that I can see) any way to avoid it.

I did run an encounter with my band I made with 1st ed. rules. Character creation is a bit different, but not so much that I felt the need to "re-roll" them. I DID convert the "fighting style" to the second edition. In general 2E (as I'll call it) is more generous with weapons, a bit less so with skills.

Regions are about the same, but you should see fewer villages, on average. This makes it a bit easier to finish and move on.

Threats seem about the same, I wanted to start in the Hinterlands, and work out via Borderlands to the Wilderness, and thence to the Dark Woods, &Goblin hills. This seems more "natural" and also perhaps easier for my team to survive and improve before they take on tougher things. I had two villages, Luxing Deeping and Badgers' Drift. Both have low threats...See more

Cheers mate.
Yeah, in addition to the extra material, we tweaked so many things, theres really no way to stitch together a print copy based on the 1st edition rules.

Travellers pack is what allows you to move yeah.
You use the "To region" column on the Encounter chart (page 76).
Any such "in-between" encounter will not affect threats anywhere of course.

You can travel anywhere reasonable based on your map. I play it that they are all in travel distance of each other, but I encourage people to draw up a map.

The threat reduction from battle should be based on what you based.
The default is the encounter table you used, but you could change it up if you felt something fit better in a different way.

I hope that helps

Hello!

Another thing I noticed is a small inconvenience. The character creation rules do not list the rules for hanger-ons. While you usually don't create them during character creation, they can be gained via unusual backgrounds (that was the case for me, I rolled up apprentice during character creation). At the moment, the player needs to figure out that hanger-ons are recruited as a town action (IIRC) and then look them up there. Having them listed in the character creation section would make it easier for inexperienced players to find their stats/the relevant information.

Good call, at least there should be a reference to the rule. I'll put that on the list.

Hello!

I downloaded the updated version. There is still a bug on the page 79. Below the example, there is text referring to the old version of choosing the threat faced. Personally, I prefer the old method, as it allows a surprise encounter by the weakest threat.

I'll fix the example but we might add back the old method as an option.

Hello!

Having the old method as an option would be great. Personally, I really enjoy solitaire gaming when I am surprised by the mechanisms. So, everything that creates something unpredictable (without being nonsensically random, though) adds to the fun for me.

The travel kit has always left me wondering. Basically, it is only required to move to the next campaign once the current campaign is finished, right? After all, there is no travelling to different regions during the campaign.

Deathworks

On the Travel Kit - At the moment yes.
Some of the expansions also require but I've kicked around more uses for it.

Long term, I may remove it and replace it with something more interesting.

Halfway through and I like what I see thus far.
1. Do you plan to rerelease the 1E supplements for 2E?
2. Failing that, do you have a conversion guide for anything that changed?
3. I suggest a single-page combined bestiary document, suitable for printing out on the backside of the Game Reference page and laminating for easy reference during the game.
4. Do you have a roster/campaign sheet made up for easy printing and use? I've been making my own, but I'd love something official.

I'll be going over the supplements in the coming week to see what needs updating, what is fine as it is and what should get a re-release to make it cooler.

Good call on the bestiary doc. I'll keep that in mind.

Yes, there is a reference sheet but I need to have the guy check it to see if it needs any updating.

Appreciate the patience and kind words!

Hello!

Another question.
For monsters that have Monster Points, how are they actually slain? Are they slain when reaching 0 MP or do they lose the extra protection the MP granted them and can be slain (or wounded) regularly when at 0 MP?

Encounters and such should work fine, the only thing that needs reworking is expansions where you find new weapons.
They shouldn't require massive conversion work, but I'll be looking through them in the next couple of weeks to see what needs updating.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
