A kingdom stands on the brink of destruction, as the vast realm called the Shadow Deep slowly swallows everything in its path. As the army fights to contain the tide of evil creatures teeming up out of the black clouds, the kingdom’s best soldiers, the rangers, must venture down into the shadows to gather information, rescue prisoners, and ambush enemy supply lines. It is a desperate fight against overwhelming odds, but every little victory brings another day of hope.

Rangers of Shadow Deep is a solo and co-operative tabletop miniatures game, in which players create their ranger, gather companions, and play through a series of missions in their fight to hold back the darkness. If their rangers survive, they will grow in power and ability, and be sent on more difficult, dangerous and intricate assignments.

This book also includes the first supplement for the game, Burning Light. In this mission, the rangers must venture to ruined convent, searching for an ancient artefact. As they choose what order to explore the ruins, and thus the order in which scenarios are played, they must gather clues to the artefact’s location. But they must be quick, for the longer they remain, the more the forces of the Shadow Deep become aware of their presence.

By the creator of Frostgrave and Ghost Archipelago.

I'm watching the ROSD episodes on youtube by GMG ..
As much as I love watching the show, I wonder: if you don't possess lots of terrain (or even miniatures), then how are you supposed to play that game?
I mean:
- Zombies for the first mission
- Spiders for the 2nd
- Kobolds for the 3rd and 4th
- Apparently you need buildings as well as trees as well as scenery for dungeons
Is that a game for the hardcore terrain builders only?
Or does it work without terrain at all? (And if yes, how so?)

Many thanks and kind regards,
Kai

That is a lot, there is no question about that. You could always buy the pre-painted D&D, Pathfinder, and Wiz-Kids miniatures. After you have them, then you could use them for a plethora of games.

Concerning the buildings/structures, you can buy the Fat Dragon Games papercraft dungeons and buildings.

You could also make everything 2d using paper cutouts if you really want to be frugal. Also, you can adjust miniatures like the gnolls could be goblins or even Kobolds like in the GMG vidz. But I agree it is certainly not an out the box game. I think it is aimed mostly at established WGamers that are looking for Co-op experiences.

If you are not a terrain builder you could draw out the layout on a battle mat if you have one of those, on paper or cardboard if not, or cut out pieces of construction paper or kiddie foam from the dollar store. It is a game aimed at miniaturists, but is very flexible in the minis to use. You can proxy other minis in, or use Pathfinder pawns or Arcknight flat plastic minis as cheap generic minis, or D&D flat circular pawns. Giant spiders are always available around Halloween at crafts and dollar stores for a pittance.

Without any physical kit at all, you could use Roll 20, Tabletop Simulator or other virtual battleboard systems for RPGs on a computer.

But it is a minis game, with the implied gathering of pieces, so if you don't like crafting or collecting or raiding other minis based games or virtualizing minis, then it isn't the game for you.

Some people use stand-up paper figures and play on 2-D terrain. Others just proxy everything. It's amazing how far a set of blocks will get you as starter terrain!

Hi Joseph,

thanks for the reply!

So, after reading the preview on Amazon, question:
Does the book include rules for creating own scenarios? Does it include rules for balancing encounters? Or do I have to play through the given missions exclusively?

Kind regards,
Kai

Ordered a printed copy for myself and a friend a couple weeks before Christmas, they were printed and shipped before Christmas and still haven't arrived. The FAQ on DTR's states it can take up to 5 weeks for delivery once printed. That is INSANE ! Still waiting for my copies to arrive. I am guessing they should arrive by Donkey sometime in 2019. DTR needs to up their game when it comes to online sales. To publishers: you guys need to either find somewhere else to sell your books or get on DTR's case about their delivery methods, there is no where on the planet that you can ship from that should take more then 10 days to deliver from, unless they are printing there books on Mars, and even then I would suspect we might get our items before 5 weeks.

In general, whenever I have ordered it has taken two-weeks or less, in the UK. That said, Christmas time can make a mess of it. If you still haven't received them, you should contact them.

I caved and went in for the lot - I'm especially glad I am getting the softcover because I find the PDF to be very unfriendly to print. The pages have a background color to them and they just do not handle well on my laser printer. The pages are muddy-looking and the amount of toner needed to print this many pages (over 200) with backgrounds is unfortunate. I'd love to be able to get a background-less and more printer-compatible version of the PDF because I do want to print it and put it in a binder.

I bought this game and am loving the way its looking. I am about to try it with my roommates but I am having a little trouble figuring out the unarmed rules. There are a few references to it throughout the document, but there are no clearly stated rules that I can find about what happens when you are unarmed.

Can someone please direct me to an FAQ or a support email?

Thanks in advance.

It is a narrative driven solo skirmish game where there is an AI that drives the enemy. Quote from the book "these rules as a set of guidelines, and not as a hard-and-fast set of instructions. The entire point of Rangers of Shadow Deep is to have fun pushing figures around on a tabletop. If you can see a way to modify these rules and increase your own enjoyment playing the game" To play the game you need a table, miniatures, a couple of twenty-sided dice, a deck of standard playing cards, a ruler or tape measure marked in inches, a copy of the Ranger Sheet from the back of this book, and a pencil. You use whatever miniatures you want. Each scenario has events, these events are driven by a standard deck of playing cards and a lookup table. You follow the missions in the book and you can level up your characters along the way. It is pretty easy to learn. I believe it took me about 30min to read and learn and then I was just playing. After using the PDF, I highly recommend either printing it for...See more

Basically each "side" rolls a die, adds a value to it. Whoever rolls highest wins. Then you subtract their defense from it, and if the value is above 0, you do damage.

I hope a future version might be available in a format like ePub that allows pages to be bookmarked. Also, when creating the PDF, how about including the table of contents as part of the PDF generation because many PDF Readers will show the table of contents and allow you to navigate directly to that section. I am sure I can could print the document but I rather not and use an electronic device instead. Otherwise, very happy with this ruleset and have been playing this Thanksgiving weekend.

I, too, am very excited to see something new from Joe McCullough. Thanks Joe! I absolutely love Frostgrave and I am sure this won't disappoint. I, too, really want a PoD option. For me, wargaming is a respite from the daily onslaught of electronics and I really do not want to rely on a screen to play. It doesn't seem like I can get the PDF printed for less than about $15 and I am sure the quality wouldn't be any where near what I would hope for. I have purchased PoD from here before and the quality has always been very good. I am all in - once PoD is available.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
