Welcome to Renegade Scout.

What is Renegade Scout? Other than 179 pages jammed full of gaming goodness?

*Renegade Scout is very old:

It is a “retro-clone” of the venerable Rogue Trader game rules many of us grew up on, offering mechanics that are familiar and well-loved to fight fantastical battles between brave heroes, terrible monsters and strange space aliens.

You can even grab your original figures right off the shelf and battle it out, using the conversion rules presented in the back.

*Renegade Scout is very new:

This isn’t a simple copy with a new lick of paint.

Everything has been updated and rewritten to play in a way that feels modern and elegant, removing the clumsy and awkward to keep the game moving and exciting.

*Renegade Scout is open to playing the game your way.

You can grab almost any figures you already own. We’ve included profiles for 15 alien species, several human troop types and monsters.

You can customize your own heroes and roll up random equipment and skills.

If you like how they do, you can level them up across multiple games, at least as long as you can keep them alive.

If you like to play campaigns, we include tools for two different approaches.

If you like vehicles or psychic powers, we got those.

An army builder? Off map artillery? Calling in evac choppers? A beefy section on how to solve everything from breaching doors to building things mid-battle?

We have all those.

Random tables? Strange terrain types? Space ghosts? Yes, yes and yes.

What if you have never written a scenario before? What if you want to be the GM? What if you don’t know how to paint a miniature? What if you want to play solo?

Included are advice sections for all of these situations and more.

* * * * *

Whether you are a hardcore gaming veteran, someone just dipping your toes into the miniatures hobby or a role player looking for some tactical action, Renegade Scout offers everything you need to get started and keep going.

The rules are aimed at roughly a platoon or so per side (2-4 units each) but options are included for both much bigger battles and "Skirmish Mode" game play where a handful of individual figures battle for survival.

* * * * *

If you supported the original crowd funding campaign, please contact me at nordicweaselgames@icloud.com for your copy.

The rules are presented in black/white but with color images. When printing the rules, make sure to select grey-scale if you want to save expensive color ink.

With a project of this size, there are almost always bugs, corrections and tweaks that come to light in the first week or two. Consider waiting a little bit, before printing the full game.

Due to the large size of the file, please be patient when downloading!

Hi. First off I just wanted to say that I am a massive fan of your work. Though I haven't gotten a game in yet, Renegade Scout seems to fix just about every problem I've had with the last few editions of 40k, as well as introducing some new concepts that intrigue me greatly.

That said I do have a couple of questions.

First: I've been running into the issue of balance quiet a bit when statting up my own Minis. Is there a more complicated method for determining unit value in the works? I mostly just play with friends so a few mismatched games won't be too big of a deal but I am curious.

Second: What is your opinion on basic units with starting skills? For example a squad of marksmen with Keen Shot.

Third: Does Rapid Fire affect all weapons as written or is it meant to affect only weapons without Volley/Sustained Fire? If it's the latter it seems a tad nuts but I'll hold off judgement until I see it in action.

Fourth: Does re-rolling a dice...See more

Cheers and so sorry for the delay.
I've been traveling and just got home yesterday.

Question 1:
There will be a more traditional points system in the future but its a bit of a bear to tackle, so I cant give time frames.

If you run into trouble with the "battle value" being broken, let me know and we'll tweak that in the meanwhile.

Second question: While not intended for entire squads, I could totally see a small sharp shooter team or similar.
Try it out, but I might use a squad-size limit of 4 for such "elite" teams.

The new sourcebook we just put out has an alternate system for "squad skills" too.

Third: It wasn't actually intended to affect Sustained and Volley weapons but I realize that as written, it does.

I could see it both ways.

RAW - It affects all.
RAI - Non-sustained/volley only.

Fourth - The original roll is completely ignored.

So I just realized I mistyped in my previous comment. I completely agree with your RAI regarding Rapid Fire. Would the skill also apply to Pistol and Slow weapons? I'm probably going to play where it doesn't but I thought I'd ask your opinion.

I also have a new question about gunslinging. Does it require more than one pistol to get multiple shots?

Last but not least, what are your thoughts on a weapon special ability that confers +1 penetration on any wound roll of natural 1? I'm trying to find something to make my not space orks more useful against armor but keep them somewhat chaotic.

Thanks again!

I'd say limit Rapid Fire for SLow weapons, but allow it on Pistols (but be ready to change that if it gets out of hand).

Gunslinging is intended to be two pistols only, but if you go full John Woo, I don't see why it couldn't work with a single pistol.

I like your idea. Sort of a critical hit function. Could be explained by explosive (but unreliable) ammunition or similar.

Hi!
Where is the review-file?
And please not the standard first 6 pages from wargamevault (with: 'thank you', blank, (c) and not even the full TOC...).
179 pp.!? So 15-20% review is a good value (TOC, index, importent text - no stories etc.).
I'm very interested but you will sell it - I can buy other products.

I'm dreadfully sorry! I thought I had enabled the preview when I uploaded it.

Let me try and fix that tonight.

edit: That's weird. It was already enabled but for some reason was not displaying on the site.
I've enabled it and also increased the page spread visible. Let me know if it works for you!

Nothing to be sorry about. I’ve gotten a good chunk of your games going back to FAD2. I was on your yahoo group as well! FAD is still one of my favorite games to the point I printed the entire book on card stock.

Ivan, is there any discount for purchasers of Renegade scout stage one?

I don't have an easy way to create a "if you bought this, buy that cheaper" discount unfortunately. It's not something the site system supports.

I'll see if I can sort something out though.

Yeah, the solution seems to be a discount code emailed to those buyers, so I'll get that set up this weekend. Thank you for your patience :-)

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
