Welcome to Renegade Scout.

What is Renegade Scout? Other than 206 pages jammed full of gaming goodness?

This is a set of science fiction miniatures rules aimed at not only recapturing the spirit and feel of old school science fiction gaming, but presenting it in an updated and improved form, combining familiar mechanics with the polish and elegance expected in a modern game.

Using this system, you can command everything from tentacle aliens to squads of futuristic troopers, tanks, walkers, dinosaurs and more. Rules include off-map support, supernatural powers and a host of strange terrain features and world conditions to fight among.

If you are looking to revive some of your favorite old miniatures, note that Renegade Scout is profile compatible with the two first editions of the most popular gothic scifi wargame, allowing troops and weapons to be used as is, but with sleeker and more elegant mechanics.

If you want a fully fledged space opera setting to dive into, you can explore the worlds of Unified Space, where a host of alien species battle for supremacy, from the blood-stained cyborg troops of the Converted to the proud K'Erin and mysterious Engineers.

If you want to just open the book and play, we include 8 Battle Scenarios ready to play with your own armies, as well as the Objective Battle letting you fight an unpredictable encounter with randomly generated objectives.
Scenario driven gaming more your speed? An array of tools and mechanics cover everything from radio communications to barricading doors.

The Army Builder allows you to construct a huge range of forces for any of the included troop types, for pick-up games using an army list and a fully fledged points system lets you build your own custom forces.

Want something a bit bigger? Why not start a Persistent Game where your troops gain experience from battle to battle. Perfect for campaigns or league play.

In short, almost whatever it is you are into and whatever scale of miniatures you enjoy, Renegade Scout has something for you.

* * * * *

Note that this is a fully updated 2nd edition of the rules, featuring much expanded content, material from several supplements, brand new options and far more pick-up-and-play possibilities than before.

If you are an experienced player, please enjoy this new edition generously funded by the fan base.

Questions regarding the transition from 1st to 2nd edition will be available on my blog.

i read up on board game geek that its possible to use units from RT and 2nd edition of a super popular gothic game. while the former did make some sense to me, was it in your intention to have 2nd edition units playable, or not really?

I was always primarily a 2nd edition guy :)
Yeah, for 2e units you have to create the 3 missing stats but you can basically just make them equal to leadership.

just read through the basic rules last night and played my first game this morning. my friend was eager to use a certain army of genetically enhanced GI's but i couldnt really figure out how i would go about choosing a profile. initially i went to the enforcers (they seemed to have a stat line close enough) but i realised they couldn't take heavy armour, and so the result was a group of decidedly weaker folk in combat armour. is there any better approach at representing elite human infantry in power armour? thanks in adv :)

Cheers. If you are trying to create something specific, Id mess with the unit builder a bit to get the result you need. Otherwise I'd probably consider something like the K'Erin profile for "those genetically enhanced guys".

My question is this d6 bucket of dice or 2d6? I ask because I am really interested in these rules and want some basic info on them.

Cheers, while the mechanics are quite updated, it does retain the use of the "buckets of dice" from rolling to hit by figure.

That being said, the default unit size is 5 figures and you alternate actions, so the bucket doesn't have to be that big!

I have Rogue Planet and I want that to be the intro to Wargaming for my group but going forward I think this maybe the next iteration because it offers a bit more crunch based on the reviews I have seen. Though I do play in 15mm is there an adjustments needed for that conversion?

Yeah, both are great games but this is definitely a more conventional and crunchy approach. They compliment each other well I think.
Though a beginner scenario is included to get you started.

No adjustments needed for 15mm. All of my play testing was done in that scale.

If you are looking for something thats a bit of a middle step between the two types, I might also suggest taking a look at Squad Hammer
https://www.wargamevault.com/product/295773/Squad-Hammer-Core--Peoples-Edition

Its PWYW and very rules light but a bit more conventional than Rogue Planet, so a good alternative to be able to have more types of experiences.

Sorry, this got missed in my inbox.
3x3 feet should do you fine to start, though a bigger space can't hurt.

Start with 4 squads, a character or two and a vehicle each for a pretty decent game. You can go bigger easily once you have learned the rules and with the "man to man" options, you can scale down to a single squad each too.

Are there any plans to add bookmarks to the pdf, or at least unlock it so readers can add their own? I can't see myself using a 179 page pdf at the tabletop without better navigation.

I was wondering if this can be used as a rpg/ story telling type game as I'm unfimilar with the original game this is styled after . I ask because I was planning to purchase all the starport scum books but this sounds like it is a one stop book for everything I would need.

Hi. First off I just wanted to say that I am a massive fan of your work. Though I haven't gotten a game in yet, Renegade Scout seems to fix just about every problem I've had with the last few editions of 40k, as well as introducing some new concepts that intrigue me greatly.

That said I do have a couple of questions.

First: I've been running into the issue of balance quiet a bit when statting up my own Minis. Is there a more complicated method for determining unit value in the works? I mostly just play with friends so a few mismatched games won't be too big of a deal but I am curious.

Second: What is your opinion on basic units with starting skills? For example a squad of marksmen with Keen Shot.

Third: Does Rapid Fire affect all weapons as written or is it meant to affect only weapons without Volley/Sustained Fire? If it's the latter it seems a tad nuts but I'll hold off judgement until I see it in action.

Fourth: Does re-rolling a dice...See more

So I just realized I mistyped in my previous comment. I completely agree with your RAI regarding Rapid Fire. Would the skill also apply to Pistol and Slow weapons? I'm probably going to play where it doesn't but I thought I'd ask your opinion.

I also have a new question about gunslinging. Does it require more than one pistol to get multiple shots?

Last but not least, what are your thoughts on a weapon special ability that confers +1 penetration on any wound roll of natural 1? I'm trying to find something to make my not space orks more useful against armor but keep them somewhat chaotic.

Thanks again!

Hi!
Where is the review-file?
And please not the standard first 6 pages from wargamevault (with: 'thank you', blank, (c) and not even the full TOC...).
179 pp.!? So 15-20% review is a good value (TOC, index, importent text - no stories etc.).
I'm very interested but you will sell it - I can buy other products.

Nothing to be sorry about. I’ve gotten a good chunk of your games going back to FAD2. I was on your yahoo group as well! FAD is still one of my favorite games to the point I printed the entire book on card stock.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
