Grey Wolves at Dusk

Watermarked PDF

Grey Wolves at Dusk are a miniature wargames rules set to simulate convoy attack and defence in the North Atlantic in World War 2. Players command U Boats from a wolf pack attacking a convoy at night, or Allied escort commanders attempting to defend the convoy. The game is simple to play but quite accurately simulates the tactics and weapons of the time.

The U boat players  use dummy models to creat a Fog of War situation for the escorts.

Bought these, finally, and have been reviewing them.

I was confused a little about rolling for U-Boat positions, but now have that sorted, I think. Wasn't sure what dice to use for that, attacks, etc., but after re-reading, and doing a little presuming, it looks like 2D6 for that (the text "roll a natural 7 on a die" confused me for a while), but I think I have that right now, since we use D6s as well for the other stuff, e.g. attacking and damage, and 3D6s for distance of the U-Boats from enemy vessels.

I am still a bit confused about U-Boat attacks on Escort Vessels from the bow though, since it looks like that is virtually impossible to do the the starting number of a 7 needed on 1D6, and the modifiers, e.g. one harder to hit if attacking it from the bow/stern. Only if the escort is moving slowly (less than 4"/turn, can we get a positive modifier to help, and that still results in a 7 on a D6 needed), and/or broadside on, can it be hit.

So, my question...See more

Rob, sorry for delay in reply, I was not aware of the post, for some reason Wargame vault doesn't send me an alert... :(
There is really no way that a bow shot on a escort can hit in this period of the war, later with sound seeking acoustic torps, and the torpedoes that could re attack then there was a slim possibility, so you are correct in your interpretation.
I made it that way because contrary to Hollywood it was such a slim chance that I really wanted it to be a 'no go'.
If you want to make it more likely then for sure give a natural 6 a chance - and then buy the skipper a medal !!!

Anyone know of a good place to print out convoy ship counters? I'm using 1/1800 A&A War at Sea minis for the warships and subs, so looking for that scale.

For counters not really I have been using 1/3000th scale ships most of the time. Maybe use ones from Avalon Hill old "Submarine" game or "Up Scope" ?....probably available as a scan on Boardgamegeek, but I haven't checked to be honest. I will also give a shout out to War Times Journal miniatures form California, they are superb, 3D printed in a variety of scales - and they look fantastic and paint up superbly, great customer service whenever I have dealt with them.

I'm interested in this, but would like to know more about the game mechanics, and/or to see reviews of how the game plays.

The game uses hidden identity to mask the location of the U boats until they are detected. This is done by having 3 models for each U Boat and escorts have to detect using, HUFFDUFF, Asdic, radar or visual searches.
THe convoy stays stationary on the table, and hunters and escorts move around that convoy using proportional move rates, eg moving on the same bearing or opposing bearings will vary the move rate.
A typical game takes about 2 hours, with a convoy of 30 ships and 3 or 4 escorts, fighting off 3 or 4 u boats. Works very well as a multi player game, simple mechanisms, but I researched a lot to make sure it was 'accurate'
Sorry for delay in reply, I didn't get any warning you had asked the question ...

Thank you.

What's the difference between version 1.8 and 1.9?
Customer avatar
David R August 16, 2020 2:25 am UTC
See below, just margins were showing on the pdf as it was a crossover from a Word doc.

Correct, my apologies for the version 1.8 glitch, it didn't go across from word to pdf as neatly as it should have.
Version 1.9 just eliminates the wide right margin, sorry for any inconvenience.

If you download v1.8, you can see that they have "Track Changes" on for the print, so you get that extra wide right hand margin.

v1.9 is the exact same version, but with "Track Changes" turned off before printing to pdf.

If you download ver 1.9, you only get ver 1.8

I would prefer a Review - instead of micro economic observations. :)

Did you play the game yet?

Hi David,

How solitaire-friendly is this game?

Hi Chris, sorry didn't get an alert form WV of your message. Very difficult to play solo, as the whole premise of the game is that there are 3 models for each U Boat and one of them is the real one, known only to the owner ...I guess you could randomize the U Boats and that would give you some hidden identity capability, but then it would be acase of playing both sides or pre designating tactics for say the Escorts, which would also work... so in short, possible, but the game was designed for 'teams' of players cooperating or coordinating together.

Even at $6.50 (for a deal of the day) this looks (to me) over market value. With respect, I recommend $4.99. WTB at that price. Keep in mind, your products aren't judged against the cost of coffee, but the market offers here. In the same way, it's not just about the number of sales you make at $6.50, but the more sales you make at $4.99. Only you (and obs) have the data to determine if that works out in your favor.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
