Sellswords and Spellslingers is a solo and cooperative fantasy miniatures game for 1 to 6 players.

Each player creates a party of fantasy adventurers with a point system. Then players choose a scenario and try to complete a mission. Foes and events are moved automatically by a deck of cards. Characters grow with experience, and a list of campaign activities is provided.

The game requires printing a deck of cards.

The download includes:

  • Full color PDF rulebook (68 pages)
  • 30 Monster cards
  • 23 event cards
  • 16 spell cards
  • 8 potion cards
  • Hundreds of counters for those wishing to play without miniatures

The game will be supported by frequent releases of scenarios and mini-campaigns. A paperback version will be available in January 2018. Cards will be available as print on demand, professionally printed cards on Drivethrucards.com.

Required to play:

Paper and pencil, at least three 20-sided dice, a couple of six-sided dice, 1 to 6 figures per player, plenty of miniatures for opponents (each scenario requires 1-2 boss type monsters and 3-8 minion type monsters per player), a play area (game mat or table) of 36x36", measurer in inches (tape measurer).

The game is non-scale specific: you can play with any scale or brand of miniatures.

Features of the game

  • Open source point system to create your heroes the way you want them, including giving them disadvantageous traits
  • Cooperative play - all players against the game instead of player vs player
  • Solo play - no opponents needed, you can run a party and the event cards will activate the monsters
  • Activation system (not IGOUGO) that creates fog of war and uncertainty
  • All monsters stats summarized on handy cards
  • Campaign activities - Your characters grow and do things other than just fighting monsters
  • RPG Lite - with creative players and the right attitude, it is possible to use Sellswords as a rules-light, GM-less rpg
  • All the rules use the same mechanism: roll a difficulty number on d20 for an action to succeed, with modifier for your characters' traits
  • Only player-characters roll dice. When it's the monster's turn to attack, PCs roll dice to defend.

I bought the printed rulebook from Lulu and the printed cards from Wargame Vault. I see that if I'd bought the rules as a download from Wargame Vault, I would have received 'Hundreds of counters for those wishing to play without miniatures'. Is is possible to download or buy the counters separately?

Will there be any expansions to this book/system?

On my download, I noticed I have only 16 event cards rather than the 23. I only noticed this because it doesn't seem like the monsters activated that much during my first play through.

Let me rephrase: Is there supposed to be 16 events cards? Or 23? If there is 23 event cards, where can I find the missing 7?

I needed to print 3x monster activates, 2x monster frenzy, 2x ambush, and 3x hoard activates.

If you print 2 additional "monster activates" and "hoard activates" each, and 1 additional "frenzy" / "ambush" each, these are 6 additional cards in total. Isn't one card still missing to go from 16 to 23?
BTW, where can I find these details about how many cards to print?

Yes, I realized that, too. I had to contact the publisher directly through ganeshagames.net "Contact Us" to get an answer. He replied right away and said there should have been a note instructing how many extras to print. I never saw the note. I didn't have the heart to reply that I still needed one more card and simply copied another "Trap" card.

I just received the event cards (great quality) and there's supposed to be two "Wandering Monster" cards instead of the extra "trap!" card.

I'll check whether there was a problem with the upload, but the PDF with the counters should be there in your download.

Ioannis, yes the counters did not upload the first time, I have sent an update with the counters both as printable PDF sheet and as separate PNG images for those who want to do their own counter sheets.

The Alternate Preview convinced me to buy it. :-) I was pretty sure I was going to buy it, but it made the decision easy. Well done! (PS - I tried resetting my password on the Ganesha Games link and never received an email. I wonder if it's working? I had intended to buy it there, but WGVault is just as good)

Are these rules suitable for dungeon crawl type adventuring/using my 3D dungeon tiles made for WHQ as terrain?
Customer avatar
andrea S January 17, 2018 7:05 am UTC
PUBLISHER
David M, At the moment, all the 10 scenarios in the rules are outdoor scenarios, but we will quickly add dungeon-based adventures as cheap add ons. The problem with dungeon tiles is that every player has a different system and it is difficult to determine size, distance etc without leaving out some players.

Excellent! I look forward to it.
I think the simplest approach is to treat dungeon tiles like any other terrain that you move through/around. If the scales right and players want to use the spaces on their dungeon tiles as a measurement aid, great. If not, you can still use a ruler.

The download includes PDFs for the cards used in the game. If you prefer to have professionally printed cards, be advised that I uploaded them to Drivethrucards -- I am waiting the proof decks before I can make them available here.

Can you format the card backs so they are in sheets that match the back of their respective card sheets, so we can print them on the flip side of the sheets? I can't get them formatted correctly they way they are now provided.
Customer avatar
andrea S January 22, 2018 12:27 pm UTC
PUBLISHER
I'll try. I can add a file of backs corresponding to the fronts... but I suspect this will work only on a double sided printer (which I do not have so I can't experiment). On a one side printer the front and back never align properly when you load the sheet.

I provided the backs because some people use transparent sleeves and just put one front and one back into each sleeve. For my own cards, I have left the backs white.

ok I have done PDFs of the cards with backs, so you get one sheet of fronts and one sheet of backs, it should work with most printers. It is a 40 mb file so it will take me some time to upload it.

cheaply priced cards but £10 to ship across the Atlantic!

yes the shipping is horrible for us in Europe. Unfortunately I have no control on the costs (I make almost no profit on the sellswords cards). Shipping from US has become prohibitive. I am looking for alternatives but it seems there aren't any. We can only hope Drivethrucards opens a print shop in Europe.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
