Five Parsecs From Home is back, leaner and meaner than ever before!

Create a crew of randomly generated personalities and see if you can make a profit on the fringes of space. Look for patrons, get into gun-battles and build up your squad.

Five Parsecs is aimed specifically at the solo gamer (though you can play with a friend just fine) and lets you build a crew, take them through missions, gain new equipment and level them up.

Watch your men, women and bug-eyed aliens improve, grow (or die horribly) as you play.

Experience random events and unforeseen circumstances.

* * * * *

Who is this game for?

If you have wanted a Necromunda style campaign experience to play solo.

If you want to play a miniatures campaign in the style of Traveller, Trigun or Borderlands.

If you want a game that is written with solo gamers in mind.

* * * * *

This is a second edition of the original Five parsecs rules. It includes the following changes:

*Completely stand-alone game based on an original, ultra-simple system.

*Stream-lined to make it far more manageable for a single player.

*Solo advice for running enemy forces is included right in the combat rules.

*The game has been condensed to focus on the results that matter. That meant pruning some random tables down.

*Far fewer exceptions and special rules to keep track of.

*We added more optional rules and difficulty settings, allowing the game system to be customized to your liking.

*An economic system allowing you to earn and spend cash.

* * * * *

All you need to play is a handful of scifi adventurer figures and some suitable enemies to get started. Figures need to be based individually. Scale is up to the player.

The PDF is laid out in single column, for the benefit of screen reading, especially in light of the popularity of ipads and android tablets as gaming accessories.

To be print-friendly, all images are grey-scale rather than color.

Should I pick this or Starport Scum which seems to cover similar territory?

If you prefer a more roleplay oriented experience, then /product/188598/Starport-Scum will fit your needs better.

Five parsecs is intended to run with very little interpretation and "game mastering" needed by the player and features more concrete systems.

Is this a supplement?

No, this version is a completely stand-alone game. No other purchases are necesary.

Does the download include reference sheets?

The site has issues with multiple files disabling the previews, so the reference sheets are included in the main game PDF. Simply print those pages and you are good to go.

Care was taken to ensure that the main weapons and equipment tables fit on single pages, to enable easy printing or in-game reference on a tablet.

If you want to continue the adventure, the game is 100% compatible with Salvage Crew (available here ) and Gang Warfare available here

Your characters can transfer between campaigns, creating a never-ending world of adventure.

Easily my favorite solo minis game. Just barely edges out Frostgrave and Walking Dead: All Out War.

Gets a lot done with very little.

I suggest adding Rory's Story Cubes or the Mythic GM Emulator to fill in the narrative gaps.

I have this, the compendium, Salvage Crew, and Gang Warfare.

More, please.

Thank you for the kind words!

I use Mythic myself though there's a lot of alternatives these days.
Stay tuned!

Cheers.
If you are mostly a solo gamer or just want to play sci-fi, get this version.

If you want to play a range of periods, get fivecore 3.

Hope that helps!

How suitable is this game for co-op play?

You could play same side with no fuss, by splitting the crew/squad between two players.

All figures activate each turn, so there shouldn’t be any concern there.

On page 50, you say that a Droid has +0.5 added to their Toughness but they don't gain XP.
How do they therefore get an increase to get it up tp +1?

Cheers and thank you for purchasing.

Droids do not earn XP but they can receive stat increases through random events or by wearing equipment that improves Toughness.

The in-universe explanation is that Droids CAN learn but very slowly (hence why we allow random events to still affect their stats but not earn regular XP)

I hope that helps!

Do bad guys move if good guys are not in their line of sight, in other words do we assume they have full situational awareness? i.e. Psycho bad guys will move towards good guys even if good guys are behind blocking terrain?

Psycho gang has one squad of good guys 20" away in full LOS, and second squad of GGs 12" behind a LOS blocking shipping container. Psychos will respond how?

Ivan S February 14, 2018 9:26 pm UTC
PUBLISHER
Yes, full awareness. They are movie bad guys and inexplicably know what you are up to (or have scanners, mutant senses or whatever works).

I tend to play it that they will react to visible opponents in priority over ones behind cover, since it creates less weird situations.
That will be part of the 1.04 updates most likely.

I'm slightly confused about assigning Reaction dice in a solo game - p.9 states to put away all dice over highest Reaction score in my squad. Does that mean that some of my characters will not get to act in every game turn? p.23 states to assign Reactions score of 1 to a new character. So my new squad of 5 guys with reactions of 1 will only activate if I roll 1's on reaction dice? That cannot be right!?
Thanks

Cheers!

The explanation might need to be improved, I'll see what you can do.

The assigned dice is who goes in the "quick" action phase (before the bad guys).

Anyone not assigned dice goes in the "slow" action phase (after the bad guys).

Does that help ?

So say I have three characters with reaction speeds 2,3 an 4. I roll 3,3 and 5. 5 gets put away, so character with R4 and R3 (assigned 3's) will be quick and finally R2 character (no assigned dice) will be slow. Is this correct?
Customer avatar
Ivan S February 14, 2018 5:19 pm UTC
PUBLISHER
Correct yes.

If you roll say a 2, 5 and 5 one character would be quick but you'd be able to assign it to any of them.

Hi! I bought this product as an impulse, hoping I would be able to "get" what it's about quickly, but I think I'm way over my head. I am mainly a solo boardgamer (ocassionally wargames), so I though this would be in the same family, but I think I was wrong. I can't seem to understand where to start, or what the play sequence is. I looked for videos on YouTube but didn't find any, there are no pre-determined scenarios, etc. Is there any resource anyone can recommend that will help me understand what's going on, or where to start (not just this, but this "type" of game)?
In other words, are there any learning resources (websites, books, learning videos) for a total solo newbie to this type of game?

Oh dear. Yeah, the rules do assume you already know how a miniatures game functions.
Let me see tomorrow if I have some resources lying around for complete beginners, otherwise maybe I can help walk you through it.

You don't have to walk me through it; I would be embarrassed if you did -you have more important things to do. Just point in a general direction if you can (or anyone else that may read this), and I'll take it from there. Thank you for responding so quickly!

Just getting in to it. Looks great but Hey - its about space. How about adding High - Normal - Low gravity? Locals and experienced - e.g. Asteroid miners - have double movement, particularly jumps, in low gravity. Others may fumble if moving max. Halve moves in High grav, again benefits for locals including aliens. Separately, add enviro suits for poisonous or no atmosphere. Again, move/fire penalties unless experienced or locals. I haven't tried these ideas out over many fights so they mey need fine tuning. They do add a bit of extra flavour and add a reason for mixing different backgrounds and races/aliens in your crew.

I kicked around whether to include environmental concerns but in the end opted against it for worry of making the game too complex.

I'll definitely keep this on the note pad though for the future, it's not a bad idea at all and it'd make different worlds more unique and distinct.

Hey Fernando I recently bought FPFH. I haven't had time to play yet as I'm making terrain/painting minis.

Do you prefer FPFH or Starport Scum if you could only choose one? Hope you see this.

I'm in the same boat, I've only tested some ideas with some "sample" setups, but mainly painting and terrain building now. If I had to choose one now it would be FPFH for quick solo games [I have no time] but I do like Starport Scum as it is "meatier" and more RPG like, if that makes sense, a lot of theme tables. Eventually I will just grab the best of both these rule systems and others out there for quick solo game system. [small squad asymmetrical hard scifi skirmishes.] hope that helps.

Quick question: on page 20 "Crew equipment" you receive the following equipment rolls:

*3 rolls on the Weapon table.
*3 rolls on the Low Tech Weapon table.
*1 roll on the Gear table.
*1 roll on the Gadget table.

What does "3 rolls on the Weapon table" mean? There is no "Weapon table", only Low Tech, Military and High Tech weapons tables.

*3 rolls on the Low Tech Weapon table.

I eventually went with 1-2 and it felt really right. Did some gaming with a randomly generated crew that happened to encounter a group of bounty hunters, possibly going after the crew leader who had some ganger past. :) Game went really well and very smooth, though it felt a bit simplistic compared to the previous edition and Five Core. Yet after the game it left me wanting more of it, so my goal was achieved - the game is light and fast, but engaging and interesting.
Still some funny quirks were found - like bounty hunters being aggressive and thus in constant move toward my crew but their special weapon was a hunting rifle, which is a heavy weapon, so suffers from being used while moving. Wit a little common sense I decided that they probably give the rifle to the most cool-headed hunter so he doesn't act as aggressive as others and doesn't have to move if he's shooting the rifle.
On the other hand - the heavy rule (penalizing movement) and taking aim rule (allowing to aim better if not moving)...See more

I have yet to play a single game, but the character creation process along with all the Campaign turn is the most inspiring setup I've ever experienced. I always thought I needed heavy RPG elements to let my fantasy flow and in that regard I was hoping Starport Scum would have lit the creativity in me, well, this one was far more successful in doing just that! I'm obviously going to salvage bits and tables from other products of yours, but this read was already among the most exciting times I had just by reading a new rulesystem.

Another quick question: when searching for a patron, recruiting, etc. Do you have to have a crew member doing that job to make the roll? Or can you just roll, not add any bonuses, and just hope for a natural 6?
Customer avatar
Ivan S November 21, 2017 5:07 pm UTC

Cheers!

This could be a little clearer, but to get any of the job rolls, you have to assign a crew member.
Though if you wanted to play it that a 6 means a Patron seeks you out, I don't think that'd break anything.

There was actually intended to be a "covered within 6" category that hits on a 5+.

I'll add that back when I get a chance. Thanks!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
