Comrades In Battle (C-in-B) uses the same basic game mechanics as COMPANY COMMANDER but has been modified to play small actions of the ACW at squad level, with units commanded by their own officers.

The basic unit formation is a group formed from 2 to 6 miniatures referred to as a “comrades in battle” (C-i-B) group. The concept can be applied to the entire period covered by the rules and is equivalent to a skirmish group commanded by a corporal. In these rules, a C-i-B group is what meant by the term “Unit”.

There were some special units attached to the infantry or cavalry, as special weapons platoons (e.g. the first machine guns used in the ACW), or specialist arms, such as engineer or sapper platoons.

“LEADERS” are officers, represented by an individual miniature (Colonel, Lieutenant-Colonel, Major, Captain, Lieutenant, 2nd Lieutenant) or NCO (Staff Sergeant, Sergeant).  Leaders can be accompanied by other miniatures with special characteristics.

Sometimes a higher-ranking Leader might be fighting in a small skirmish, because he was surprised by enemies or “caught” in the middle of the battle; he could be part of an HQ group, perhaps, together with his ADC’s. Or, in the confusion of battle, different UNIT types and LEADERS, could find themselves muddled together so that units of different arms of service, battalions and regiments were fighting alongside each other. All this is the stuff of which C-i-B is made.

The Morale system has been changed simplified. At this scale, small units suffering a certain number of hits (casualties) from fire and combat, normally cease combat and go to the rear to recover and regroup. They would then return to the combat, if their comrades were still fighting.

To simplify play, all Units and Leaders are provided with cards that give many of the characteristics needed to play, which avoids the necessity of constant checking of the rules and lists for details needed to play a specific Unit or Leader.

Players should decide from which historical regiments each of their Units & Leaders are drawn and may then pick out a card with that regiment’s name or one that has similar stats (in the player’s opinion) to the chosen regiment. If several Units have similar stats, one card can be used for all such Units.

In addition, the introduction of a limited number of Random events, that could occur in any battle, are represented by a small deck of War Cards. This provides feeling of Fog of War, so that not all the things that happen in the game are under control of the players. As with Unit & Leader cards, we will release new War Cards with new events in future editions.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
