Narrow Seas (For Any Age of Sail Game) is a generic version of the scenario generator and campaign rules for Captaincy. It's a meta-game that supplements whatever Age of Sail rules you currently use. It depicts small fight-or-flight encounters between patrols, cargo ships, and raiders, using novel terrain generation and scoring rules to make these encounters very different from fleet battles. Plus, it's free.

We're about to start our first Narrow Seas campaign using Sails of Glory and I have a couple of questions:

1) Page 8, A.IV Create the Seascape, first paragraph, last line says die rolls of '7 and 4 must be spent as 7 and 11'. Shouldn't that be 'must be spent as 4 and 11', since paired dice are read as the low die and the sum?

2) Page 20, B.II Recovery. There is provision for repairing casualty hits and movement hits but not for hull hits. Are hull hits repaired automatically like canvas and rope hits?

Thanks, this campaign system looks great and we are really excited about trying it out.

Hi Ed,

Thanks for writing. I've been largely offline for the first two months of 2018, so I'm afraid my replies will be too late for your campaign. I hope you enjoyed Narrow Seas , and I appreciate any feedback about it.

1) Page 8 under A.IV Create the Seascape: the last line of the first paragraph says a die roll of '7 and 4 must be spent as 7 and 11'. Shouldn't that be 4 and 11 as you are supposed to read the low die of the pair and the sum?

You're correct. Thanks for pointing out this error.

2) Page 20 under B.II Recovery: there is no mention of repairing hull hits. For Sails of Glory the casualty hits would be crew, the movement hits would be masts lost, and the loss of canvas and rope would be sail damage hits. Is hull damage repaired automatically like canvas and rope damage?

That's a good question. Captaincy is a little unusual in only tracking the ship's seaworthiness and morale. If the hull hits in your game...See more

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
