Table Air Combat: PBY-5 Catalina

Print-and-Play PDF

Table Air Combat is a fast, simple air combat game that can be played on any flat surface.  All you need are some six-sided dice and some coins to provide weight for the aircraft counters.  Everything else can be printed from this ruleset.

PBY Catalina
Each player has a flight of four fighters, represented by two counters.  Aircraft counters move by means of curved “performance rulers” that represent the aircraft’s historical cornering ability and maximum speed.

Each performance ruler is unique to each aircraft, and contains all the speed, cornering, and weapon information needed.

TAC is designed for portability;  The entire game can fit in a plastic bag.  Even the largest battles can take place on a fast-food restaurant table.

Each aircraft is sold separately.  Only pay for the ones you want, and print out as many copies as you need to create your own epic WWII air battle.

The PBY-5 Catalina was a flying boat designed for maritime patrol and rescue.  Although slow, it had a long range and the ability to operate from unimproved pacific islands. When armed with bombs, depths charges, and torpedoes, it was effective at anti-submarine and anti-shipping.

Cat's Claws: A single PBY attacks a German U-boat off the Atlantic coast of the United States.

Black Cats Prowl: Black-painted Catalinas attack Japanese shipping at night.

Dumbo to the Rescue:  Rescue a downed bomber crew in the Pacific.  F4U Corsairs defend the PBY from  A6M5 Zero fighters.

Kiska Blitz: Attack a Japanese foothold in the Aleutian islands.  A6M2 Zero fighters function as defending float fighters.

Bay of Biscay Encounter:  RAF Catalinas and U-boats engage a deadly air-surface duel.  A Ju-88 fighter variant intercepts the Catalinas

This set contains only the PBY-5Catalina. Other aircraft referenced in the scenarios are sold separately.

Targets include:

•Kagero-class Japanese destroyer

•Japanese cargo ship

•German Type XIIF U-boat (surfaced and submerged)

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
