Starmada Unity Rulebook

Watermarked PDF

Now updated to version 2.0!

Starmada™ is a miniatures board game of starship combat. At its most basic level, players take command of space fleets in a general attempt to reduce each other to just so much space junk. At its most advanced, the game can be customized to breathe life into any science fiction background that players might imagine.

Novices shouldn't fret; the core set of rules has been designed with simplicity and ease of play in mind, accessible even to beginners. On the other hand, seasoned veterans should find the concise nature of the rules quite refreshing. It allows players to concentrate on the finer points of squashing their opponents rather than arguing about rules interpretations, without sacrificing any of the flavor or excitement of more complex games.

Simple, but not simplistic, is the guiding principle.

The Unity Rulebook represents what we expect will become the definitive version of a game that has gone through several updates over more than two decades. In that time, players around the world have grown to love Starmada for its shallow learning curve, depth of experience, and ease of play, even as they differ over which release represents the One True Vision.

The goal of this edition, designated PROJECT UNITY, was to draw from the best parts of each incarnation of the game, from the Compendium and Starmada X, through the Admiralty Edition and 2012's Nova Rulebook, and unify those concepts in a way that allows experienced starship captains to continue enjoying the game they love while drawing new players into the fold.

Long-time players will be thrilled to learn there is no need to convert existing starship designs to this new edition: comprehensive rules are included which allow players to use both Admiralty and Nova ship display sheets with a minimum of modification.

With the release of the Unity Rulebook, we hope to revitalize the game and introduce the thrills of tabletop battles in deep space to a whole new generation. The Universal Game of Starship Combat is back, and better than ever!

Daniel, I see a comment by a purchaser, but I want to verify. If I get this do I need to get the Starmada: 2020 Rules Annex, or does this version, at 2.0 now, include all of that material?

You do not need the Rules Annex, as all of the rules updates have been incorporated into version 2 of the Unity Rulebook. However, the Rules Annex includes additional material.

Dan, are you aware of Corvus Belli using your "Starmada" name for their next project? Did you sign a deal with them or are they using it without your knowledge?

Sadly, I won't be playing Unity as I use Open Office & the Unity ship builder I downloaded from the MJ12 site has (to date) refused to work properly. Yes, I know it works on Excel, but I won't be forced into buying Excel just for Unity when I already have a working spreadsheet program.
I used to love Admiralty edition but now can't find a copy of the AE builder on the MJ12 site (guess it's gone out of fashion!) so can't play that either now.
Sigh … back to Full Thrust, which is accessible.
Sorry Daniel …

Sorry to hear this. I'm sure someone out there has been working on converting the Drydock to work with Open Office -- you can ask over at the forums:

Regarding the Admiralty Edition shipbuilder, it is still available:

Will there be a Klingon Armada Unity Edition?

There will indeed be Star Fleet Universe versions of the Unity edition (Klingon Armada, Romulan Armada, etc.). There are no official release dates yet but they are in-work. I played two games with the current versions of the rules hosted by the designer at a local con in early June 2017.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
