Nerves, Exhaustion and Death in the Air...

Lacquered Coffins is a simple and fast-play WW2 air combat game aimed at between 4 and 20 aircraft per side. The game focuses on the interaction of fighters, bombers, ground attack and utility aircraft, and can be played on a 4' X 4' or 4' X 6' table.

What does Lacquered Coffins offer?

  • Good balance of historical accuracy and simplicity
  • Bombing, Torpedo attacks and Reconnaissance all play an important role
  • Based on the first-hand accounts of pilots
  • 6 Missions included, land or sea battles can be fought
  • Stats included for over 200 Aircraft
  • Luftwaffe, RAF, Soviet, US, Japanese and Italian air forces all covered
  • 3 Periods - Early Mid and Late, showing the evolution of aircraft during the war
  • 4 Pilot qualities available - Poor quality pilots are less effective, aces are deadly
  • Free-form squadron building; aircraft, pilots and ordnance have points values
  • Simple to play, games take less than 2 hours

Lacquered Coffins is aimed at 1/600 scale miniatures, but 1:144 could be used just as easily. The game requires minimal equipment, just dice, a tape measure and a circular protractor - No fancy flying stands necessary!

Hi Jonathan F - the print on demand requirements have changed recently, and we've been unable to upload printed files. Currently working on resolving this - sorry for the inconvenience

Is there a printer friendly version without the yellow background?

That's weird. I just bought it, and while I'm excited to start reading, I expected to see a printer friendly version, rather than this yellow one, based on your response above. Did I misinterpret what you were saying? It's not a huge deal, but I'd prefer to print without the yellow.

Ugh. please ignore the above! My download link was just for the fancy version, but I just now looked in My Library, and both versions are there. Apologies for wasting everyone's time.

Hi Terrance - There is no QRS (Quick Reference Sheet did you mean?) as the rules are quite concise - spread over about 5 or 6 pages. Although it would certainly be good to do, I haven't quite had the time to go back and look at this game.
As for FAQ - here is probably the best place for that, all the questions I've received are essentially here.
We have a forum with its own area for Lacquered Coffins questions, but no one has ever posted asking anything about this game there:
https://ostfrontgame.freeforums.net/board/17/lacquered-coffins
We also have a discord server, with a channel for Lacquered Coffins discussion:

Hope that helps!

Hi Tom, thanks for the reply. Yes I meant Quick Reference Sheet! :D and agreed, the rules are quite concise.
Enjoyed missile threat as well, but now our gaming group is going to give the WW2 version a go.

My PDF and physical rulebook have different points values for the aircraft (for example, in the book a BF109 E is 20 points, and in the PDF it's 19). Which is correct?

Hi Robert - that's odd, they should be the same, I'll look into this when I get home. Maybe just stick with the physical rulebook for the moment.

Hi Robert - the PDF is definitely the latest version, adding 2 aircraft. The only points difference I can see is the early war BF-109, which is 1 point different due to having LMGs instead of MGs. I'll have a look at updating the printed version and uploading a corrected PDF. Sorry about the confusion!

Hi!
One question... In a 1 to 10, how would this system stand for solitaire play?
Thanks!

I would say about a 4 - there are no solo mechanics in the ruleset, but if you're happy to control both sides, the mandatory move makes the gameplay quite chaotic so its difficult to predict what the table will look like in the next turn. The options available to an aircraft/pilot at any time are usually limited, so in that way it suits solo - the enemy will always just try to attack you. The decisions come at the aircraft roster writing stage (what kind of aircraft to take and what quality of pilots) and at the large scale tactics (where to apply force, which aircraft to engage first, etc.)

There's a guy who played an entire solo campaign with Lacquered coffins, albeit modified slightly for the cold war. You can check out his games and AARs here:

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
