Fireteam:Modern - Modern Miniature Wargame Rules

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Fireteam Modern is a set of small unit skirmish wargame rules for modern combined arms land combat using 15-28mm scale miniatures. The rules can be used to fight battles from any post WW2 conflict dating from the 1950s to the modern day or the near future.

These rules have been designed to work with opposing forces of approximately platoon size with additional reinforcements such as small numbers of armoured vehicles and light artillery support.

This is a new and updated version of the rules

The biggest change to the rules in this new edition is the removal of activation dice, to be replaced with activation pips. These “pips” allow far more flexibility in giving teams actions and also increases the importance of officers as leaders as they can now use their pips to command other units.

The Morale rules have also been tweaked and clarified, especially with regards to Morale checks and falling back.

Close quarters combat has also been simplified and has been made marginally less deadly with there now being greater chance of an enemy withdrawing rather than fighting hopelessly to the last man.

Does anyone have any experience playing this solo? I assume since there's rules for asymmetrical warfare it wouldn't be too difficult.

Clicking on "Rory Crabb" under 'Author(s) in the side bar, gives a blank Drivethru page with "No matches found."

Clicking on "Rory Crabb" underneath the game title gives a Drivethrupage with 1 'Hottest Titles' result of "Fighting Iron - Naval Wargame Rules for the Ironclad and Pre -Dreadnought Eras", ---but under 'Products' section on the same page it says, "No matches found."

What's up with that? Did he pass away or something? You have to click 'See All Reviews' in the side bar to find out he has -at least- 4 other games.

Depends what website you are on. Authors can choose which of the RPGNOW sites their products are published on. I guess sometimes they miss the checkbox for an item.

If you click 'author' on WarGameVault you see all their products. It is very frustrating at times!

The author updated their blog in June this year, so can only hope they're still around! They deleted their facebook page though. Seems they updated Armoured Strike in June too so they're still working on rules!

It's OK, I found it on Lulu. Would that be the latest version?

I notice that there are two questions about rulebook incompleteness/missing information on April 26 and July 24 that weren't answered. On a previous post, the author mentioned 'looks like some of the detail was lost as i was editing the rules, ill get an updated file with the corrections uploaded ASAP' replying on April 27, 2020 to a post on Jan 2, 2020. Have the possible issues mentioned in the April 26 and July 24 posts been addressed? I know it can be frustrating answering questions when a purchaser may perhaps be mistaken. Appreciate any clarification.

After just rereading it, it appears to me that those concerns were addressed with this updated edition. There are still some spelling errors and a couple oddities still though:

Classes: Irregular, Tier 1 Irregular, Conscripts, Regulars, Elites. Tier 1 Regulars are never explained, and Irregulars and Conscripts appear to have the exact same stats (unless I'm missing something). Irregulars can ignore squad cohesion, though.

No mention of how to class Medics or Snipers (house ruling them as Specialists in my games).

Overall I think it covers infantry combat pretty well, but I haven't had a chance to actually play it yet unfortunately.

Should "Medics" have a higher point cost than standard troops? I noticed in the sample platoon lists that the US Medic is a Specialist while the Russian one is a standard Conscript soldier.

What forces are included in the base rules? I'm looking to simulate counter-terrorist operations in a western city, as well as some criminal activity like a bank heist. Would that be possible with the included lists? (SWAT teams and irregulars?)

Hi purchased this a few days ago, just reading through and the sequence of play starts at number 5, Resolve delayed indirect fire ... barrages. What happened to phases 1 to 4? Have I missed something in my reading?

I'm assuming the order is supposed to start on 1 for Resolve indirect fire, and the numbering is just off.

Based on the reviews it sounds like this rule set had supplements that are now missing and is missing key statistic components making it incomplete? Is a work in progress?

Hi Rory,

Just bought the rules, they look really good. Had a quick read though and had some a couple of queries.

- On Equipment - there are points values listed for a load of equipment but I can't see any rules. E.g. ECM, Surveillance Equipment, ERA, Composite Armour, laser gun sight etc.

- On armour - There are points listed for upgrades side armour but I can't see how to work out what the side and rear armour values?

- Canister shot doesn't seem to need to reload, but other ammo types do - is this correct?

May thanks

Barney

I have a question about vehicle armor. The rules say vehicles have different armor values, depending on facing (front, side, rear). The vehicle listings only designate one value (for example, a heavy tank is rated 11). How do you calculate the different facings?

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
