"Vampire, Vampire, Missiles Incoming!"

The Game of Modern Naval Warfare

Naval Command is a set of wargame rules for recreating naval battles with fleets of miniature warships and aircraft in the age of the guided missile and jet aeroplane. Covering the period from the late 1950s to the modern day or near future.

The game can be played with fleets ranging in size form one or two ships per side to full sized battlegroups of ten or more ships. The rules can be used for different sizes of ships ranging from small fast attack craft up to super-carriers engaged in open sea battles or littoral and amphibious missions.

The rules reflect the combined arms nature of modern naval warfare and include full rules for the following:

  • Surface Vessels
  • Submarines
  • Helcopters
  • Fixed Wing Aircraft

The aim of these rules is to create a game that captures the feel and provides a fairly accurate recreation of modern naval engagements but is still relatively quick to play with reasonably sized fleets and does not require excessive bookkeeping and paperwork. A game can be played on an average sized gaming table (such as 4' x 6') and should only take a few hours to play.

New 2021 Edition

This new version of the rules is the culmination of years of playing the game and the execellent feedback and expertise provided by the Naval Command Facebook group. As well as lots of small improvements and updates the follwing changes have been made:

  • New system for submarine deployment, movement, and detection that will require players to carry out effective ASW tactics.
  • The addition of altitude levels for aircraft and missiles meaning that different air defence systems now have more well defined roles.
  • Improved missile and torpedo procedures
  • Updated and expanded fleet lists.

2021 update looks amazing! Is there any site or community where we can find printable completed ship cards without signing up for Facebook?

I understand the decision to remove point values from the game, but it does make it much more difficult to throw together a quick casual game instead of a pregenerated or planned scenario. There is no motivation to ever bring something other than a carrier strike group if your chosen navy can put one together, and no way to determine how many surface action groups a non-carrier player needs to bring if they hope to actually challenge a CSG. I understand this reflects the real world balance of power, but the stated goal of Naval Command is to produce a game, not a historically accurate simulation.

Hello Folks, just purchased these rules and like the look of them. Is there any other way to get updates as I don't do facebook. I have just painted up some SU-24 Fencer's and was looking for the stats for this aircraft.

Hello, Just had a quick look - looks really promising - nice & clean layout, fine fleet lists - but what about scenarios?
Even some basic tutorial ones? Hard to start playing without them.
(Eric S mentions some free Falklands and Red October (?) I did not found any.. )

The new version (2019) is clearly organized and well written. Various examples help understand the different rules. Database is impressive and markers are cool. Very nice job! My only interrogation right now is the subs hidden movement. I can't figure how an unidentified sub moves: do I simply move all its sonar markers or do they stand still and the sub "jumps" from a sonar contact marker to the closest one. I'm missing something.
Anyway, thanks Rory to keep this game alive: it will be played!

What has changed from v2 to v3? I ask mainly because v3 is smaller in file size with 92 pages versus 114 pages in v2. Thanks.

Totally worth $10 folks if you wanna have a modern naval game to play, that isn't harpoon.

I would have preferred a bit more detail on things, but I'm ok with harpoon levels of detail. This kinda reminded me of the various simple starship games out there like the mongoose stuff or BFG, though with a nifty feel to it.

Make sure you get the ship lists at https://rorycrabb.wordpress.com/naval-command/.

Though the rules are a little light on detail for me, it is a great and well written rule set.

If you want help making those cards, let me know, and I can write something that takes the raw data and spits out little cards you can add the pictures to (or specify them in the raw data, like an excel file).

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
