Up Front Banzai Expansion [BUNDLE]

Banzai - Tactical Warfare in the S.W. Pacific

Banzai is an expansion variant for Up Front. Just as Desert War provides a new environment and more nationalities for Up Front players, Banzai provides a new theatre for the skirmishes of existing nationalities as well as intriguing new hand capacities and nationality traits with British and Japanese units.

The Banzai expansion was originally published in 1984 by Avalon Hill.

What do I get?

With permission from Wizards of the Coast / Avalon Hill, Wargame Vault has digitally re-mastered the original components of Banzai. This complete re-creation of the original release includes everything originally published (except the original box!) with several extra features and new accessories.

We have incorporated all known errata into all cards and rules.

Action Card Deck

The original Banzai expansion did not include Jungle themed Action Cards, so players needed to use European looking terrain cards from the base Up Front set with modfications to serve as the Jungle terrain. This made it odd to be simulating a Jungle battle with terrain that looked like temperate forest and having to memorize some terrain rules to apply to certain cards.

In speaking to the Up Front community, players wanted terrain cards specific to Banzai to better represent the terrain, so we had artist Jeff Holt create new art in the style of the original cards to represent the terrain and created all new terrain cards with stats for the specific Jungle terrain changes from the rule book incorporated onto the new cards.

So what you get with this set of Banzai is a complete, 162 card, poker-size Action Deck printed on premium playing card stock. The deck includes the new terrain cards and all known errata. The artwork on the card back has also been changed to identify them as different from Up Front or Desert War Action Decks. Cards that were not changed by Banzai rules are unchanged here except for the card backs.

Banzai Action Cards

Personnel Cards

Premium printed mini-cards depicting the infantry personalities and heavy weapons for the British and Japanese, and leader cards used with American Up Front squads to depict American Marines. These cards are re-created from high-quality scans of the original cards and have known errata corrected.

Vehicle Cards

Premium printed poker-size Vehicle Cards for the British and Japanese from Banzai. These cards are also re-created from high-quality scans of the original cards and have had known errata corrected.

Counter Sheet

This product is a printed scan of the original counter sheet from Banzai. It is printed on playing card stock and each counter will need to be cut apart.

Also included is a pdf of the counters so that you can make your own custom counters if you wish (some players prefer to mount their own on thicker stock).

Group Cards (new accessory)

Premium printed poker-size Group cards that you can use in place of the Group counters from the original game. (Which are also included in this product) Each double-sided card identifies each group on the table, and includes rule information specific to the nationality being played. They keep easy to read rule playing reminders right on the table with each squad. Also included are Japanese Banzai attack cards with rule reminders for using Banzai attacks. 17 cards total.

Banzai Group Cards

Weapon Cards (new accessory)

Premium printed mini-sized cards that you can use in place of the weapons counters (which are also included in this title) for the British and Japanese for Banzai. These cards have been designed with input from long-time Up Front players, they are easier to read than counters and you only need a few cards to replace all of the counters for the British and Japanese. Each card has four weapons printed on them with their stats. Tuck them under the top of a personality card if they are equiped with that weapon, turn it sideways if it malfunctions. Also included are the Sniper lost cards and two American weapon cards. Using these along with the Group cards, you would not need to use any counters from Banzai at all if you wish. 22 cards total.

Banzai weapon Cards

Compilation Rule Book

This 57 page pdf rule book includes all of the original rules for Avalon Hill's classic games Up Front, Banzai and Desert War. All known errata from the originals have been fixed in this compilation. This rule book is also available in a glossy cover printed version separately here. Since our cards and books are each printed at different locations, you would need to order the rule book in a second order and pay separate shipping from Banzai.

Up Front Compilation Rulebook

Finally, what is not included in this Banzai set is any re-creation of the original box. The cards will all come to you wrapped in decks. We recommend you add 3 of our large deckboxes to your order (just US$1 each) to store your Banzai cards.

We (Wizards) recognize that some of the legacy content available on this website does not reflect the values of the Dungeons & Dragons franchise today. Some older content may reflect ethnic, racial, and gender prejudice that were commonplace in American society at that time. These depictions were wrong then and are wrong today. This content is presented as it was originally created, because to do otherwise would be the same as claiming these prejudices never existed. Dungeons & Dragons teaches that diversity is a strength, and we strive to make our D&D products as welcoming and inclusive as possible. This part of our work will never end.

Is the Banzai bundle a stand alone expansion game and can be played on it's own? Or do I also need the original full game of Up Front to play Banzai? Thanks

You would still need either the counters or the counter substitute cards from Up Front.

What are the size of these "mini-cards" for weapons/personality?

Can they be ordered in anything, but "mini"?

The size of the mini cards is approximately 2.5" X 1.625", they are also available separately in poker size.

Recently purchased the Up Front bundle and will be getting this also. I'm looking to get a large enough "box" to hold all of the sets (base, desert, and jungle). Can you tell me how many of each sized card there are in this and the desert set? I already have the card count for the base game. Thank you.

Does the price of $45 U.S. include shipping and if so, does it include Canada as well or is there an additional charge to ship it there.

Shipping will be extra, and Canada will have extra import charges as well. You can add the product to your cart, enter your shipping address and see how much the shipping will be before you make your purchase.

There are a couple of reasons that the bundles and such are the way they are. We first offered Up Front as only a bundle, then customers just wanted the Action cards, so we offered those separately. Then it was personnel cards, then it was errata cards, then it was AFV cards, and poker size personnel cards, and pretty soon we had 13 different titles for one game! It became confusing for customers and a bookkeeping and production problem for us keeping everything straight. So when we did the expansions we cut it down to a more manageable number of titles, the bundle with everything, just the Action decks because they were totally new, and the larger poker size personnel cards that are easier to read.

I can understand the Question of Jordan very well. I think, the Action Card Deck of this Bundle is not really needed because most of the Deck should be the same as in the Up Front base game - but this is the most expensive part of this bündle. If you already own the Base game (which is necessary to play this Expansion), for Banzai you would only need its specific personnel cards and the vehicle (AFV) cards. But the personnel cards you can only buy seperately in the larger poker size format (which doesn't matches to the standard personnel cards of the base game). And the AFV cards you cannot get seperately. The contained group and weapon cards are only optional for playing the game.
So I cannot understand your bundling. And I cannot understand why the AFV cards are cannot be bought seperately.
I cannot find a right combination for buying the base game with the expansions in a convenient way...

You can get the poker size personnel cards and the Action decks for both Banzai and Desert War separately, but not the other cards, they are only available in the bundles. Sorry!

Are the vehicle, group, and weapons cards from Banzai (or Desert War) available separately? Or is this bundle the only way to get them?

For the card sleeve issue for these boxes , i used Mayday games Mimi 41mm x 63mm (1 5/8 x 2 1/2) 125% thicker 50 per pack. For the small cards. I used Perfect Fit ,card barrier by KMC. Size 64mm x 89mm 100 per pack. these sleeves where made to fit inside a standard sleeves. They are made in Japan. Now that is said. I am not sure how they will hold up, but i have not seen any problem so far. All cards for Up Front plus the poker size character cards all fit with sleeves in 5 large boxes and 3 small boxes.I hope this is helpful!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
