Adding the French and Italians to Up Front

DESERT WAR is an expansion variant for Up Front. Just as Banzai provides a new environment and more nationalities for Up Front players, Desert War provides a new theatre for the skirmishes of existing nationalities as well as intriguing new hand capacities and nationality traits with Italian and French units.

The Desert War expansion was originally published in 1984 by Avalon Hill.

What do I get?

With permission from Wizards of the Coast / Avalon Hill, Wargame Vault has digitally re-mastered the original components of Desert War. This complete re-creation of the original release includes everything originally published (except the original envelope!) with several extra features and new accessories.

We have incorporated all known errata into all cards and rules.

Action Card Deck

The original Desert War expansion did not include desert themed Action Cards, so players needed to use European looking terrain cards from the base Up Front set with modfications to serve as the desert terrain. This made it odd to be simulating a desert battle with terrain that looked like temperate forest and having to memorize some terrain rules to apply to certain cards.

In speaking to the Up Front community, players wanted terrain cards specific to Desert War to better represent the terrain, so we had artist Jeff Holt create new art in the style of the original cards to represent the terrain and created all new terrain cards with stats for the specific desert terrain changes from the rule book incorporated onto the new cards.

So what you get with this set of Desert War is a complete, 162 card, poker-size Action Deck printed on premium playing card stock. The deck includes the new terrain cards and all known errata. The artwork on the card back has also been changed to identify them as different from Up Front or Banzai Action Decks. Cards that were not changed by Desert War rules are unchanged here except for the card backs.

DW Action Cards

Personnel Cards

Premium printed mini-cards depicting the infantry personalities and heavy weapons for the French and Italians. These cards are re-created from high-quality scans of the original cards and have known errata corrected.

Vehicle Cards

Premium printed poker-size Vehicle Cards for the French and Italians from Desert War. These cards are also re-created from high-quality scans of the original cards and have had known errata corrected.

Counter Sheet

This product is a printed scan of the original counter sheet from Desert War. It is printed on playing card stock and each counter will need to be cut apart.

Also included is a pdf of the counters so that you can make your own custom counters if you wish (some players prefer to mount their own on thicker stock).

Group Cards (new accessory)

Premium printed poker-size Group cards that you can use in place of the Group counters from the original game. (Which are also included in this product) Each double-sided card identifies each group on the table, and includes rule information specific to the nationality being played. They keep easy to read rule playing reminders right on the table with each squad. 12 cards total.

DW Group Cards

Weapon Cards (new accessory)

Premium printed mini-sized cards that you can use in place of the weapons counters (which are also included in this title) for the French and Italians in Desert War. These cards have been designed with input from long-time Up Front players, they are easier to read than counters and you only need a few cards to replace all of the counters for the French and Italians. Each card has four weapons printed on them with their stats. Tuck them under the top of a personality card if they are equiped with that weapon, turn it sideways if it malfunctions. Also included are the Sniper lost cards and surrender cards that have rule reminders about rules for surrendered troops. Using these along with the Group cards, you would not need to use any counters from Desert War at all if you wish. 20 cards total.

DW Weapon Cards

Compilation Rule Book

This 57 page pdf rule book includes all of the original rules for Avalon Hill's classic games Up Front, Banzai and Desert War. All known errata from the originals have been fixed in this compilation. This rule book is also available in a glossy cover printed version separately here. Since our cards and books are each printed at different locations, you would need to order the rule book in a second order and pay separate shipping from Desert War.

Up Front Compilation Rulebook

Finally, what is not included in this Desert War set is any re-creation of the original envelope. The cards will all come to you wrapped in decks. We recommend you add 3 of our large deckboxes to your order (just US$1 each) to store your Desert War cards.

Can I buy the Action Card Deck separately? I am asking, because the Banzai-Deck is available without the other material.

You would also need either the counter sheets or counter substitute cards from Up Front for the Banzai and Desert War games.

Can the Desert bundle be played by itself without the base Up Front game? I was thinking about getting the base Up Front game bundle, the Banzai bundle and the Desert bundle. If I can run three games simultaneously, that covers 6 players that most conventions prefer for game size as a minimum.

Is it possible to buy the new action deck for Desert War or Banzai! separately?

I'm an old fan of Up Front and Avalon Hill in general, but this seems like a significant overprice for a reprint.

Hi Jim,

The original Desert War had 70 cardboard cards, a sheet of counters and a four page rule book. Our reprint contains a full 162 card desert themed Action deck, the original 70 cards, 32 counter-replacement cards, a printed sheet of counters, a pdf of the counters and a 56 page compilation rule book in pdf that includes all of the rules from all three Avalon Hill games. In addition, all of our cards are premium printed coated playing cards, and all known errors on the original cards and rules have been corrected.

So, as you can see, our reprint offers a good bit more product than the original had. And if you figure in inflation, it still costs less than the original did!

I'm not trying to be critical of your offering, it just seems that the price for a reprint is high. I know you have costs that I'm unfamiliar with. I'm glad you're offering it and keeping the game out there.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
