The Stinson SM-1 Detroiter

A Pioneer Airliner of 1926

The six-seat Stinson SM-1D Detroiter was a braced high-wing monoplane which made its first flight on 25 January 1926.  Seventy-five of the Wright J-5 powered versions were built, followed by 30 Wright J-6 powered aircraft. From 1928, SM-1 aircraft were used on scheduled services by Braniff Air Lines and by Northwest Airways.

The SM-1 was a very refined aircraft for its day, having an enclosed cabin, wheel brakes, and a self starter. It hit the headlines with a near 13,000 mile flight from the U.S. across the Atlantic to Japan. This hazardous flight, two-thirds of the way around the world, was ended in Tokyo, more or less by popular demand. The airplane was shipped home by boat, to the relief of the pilots, who now realized the folly of their undertaking

Four of the SM-1’s were shipped to China and in 1928 operated the first regular air mail service in China.

The SM-1 was also operated by the Peruvian Air Force and by Faucett Peru, the first commercial airline in Peru and one of the first in Latin America.

Three of these aircraft were operated by the Honduran Air Force in 1933.

In the United States, the first aircraft of Braniff Air Lines was an SM-1 flying from Tulsa to Oklahoma City.  Northwest Airways also used the SM-1.

Our 1/64th scale kit of the Stinson Detroiter is perfect for Pulp or Adventure gaming in the 1920’s and 30’s.   The completed kit measures 7 x 10 x 2 inches and is presented as a downloadable .pdf which has active layers so you can choose between 4 different aircraft with multiple paint schemes.   Build Braniff Air Lines  first aircraft, one of the four China Air Transport planes,  a corporate transport or a private plane.

HI Patrick: No Problem. The kit you have downloaded will make several different Stinson SM-1 type aircraft. Open your .pdf in Adobe reader. Scroll through the instruction pages down to the first of the kit pages. Look on the upper left hand corner of the screen. You will see three icons.
Click on the third one down. The one that looks like two pieces of paper. This will turn on the layers. To turn a layer off or on click on the little "eye" symbol. Turn everything off except the Base image. Then have fun mixing and matching the different layers. To make the Braniff SM-1 Turn on the Red Body, Red Wings, Braniff Airlines, Braniff Wing, Wing outline, wing overlay, Specularity Image, and tail number 1926. By changing the combinations of layers you can make more different kits than I care to count. Thanks John McEwan

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
