In Old School Computer Game (OSCG) you create a party of adventurers and explore a sandbox world, completing quests and accumulating treasure and experience as you go. In OSCG, I have attempted to re-create the fun of my favorite computer role-playing games from the late 1980s and early 1990s. The game mechanics are based on the excellent retro-clone Dark Dungeons, the interface is a mash-up of early PC and console games, amd minimalist art conveys the game while leaving the details to your imagination.

Features
- 13 classes: bards, clerics, druids, fighters, magic-users, monks, paladins, psionicists, rangers, thieves, dwarves, elves and halflings
- 17 kits and 7 spell school specializations to choose from (there are 136 possible class/kit/school combinations)
- 199 spells for magic-users, 56 spells for clerics, 79 spells for druids, and 34 powers for psionicists
- 450 opponents to encounter and defeat (and another 323 subtle variants)
- 2601 magical items to find and use (including 4 end-game reward artifacts)
- a large, randomly-generated world map to explore, featuring hundreds of dungeons, ruins, castles, towers and pyramids
- over 250 quests to complete (a mix of randomly-generated and hand-crafted content)

The game is written in Java, and will run on Windows and Linux computers. To run the game, you must have Java 17 or later installed on your computer.  If you do not already have it installed (or have an older version installed), you can freely download the latest Java version from Oracle (https://www.oracle.com/java/technologies/downloads/) or Java.net (https://jdk.java.net/).

The game contains content licensed under the Open Game License version 1.0a. If you unpack the JAR file (you can use 7-Zip or any other ZIP file manager), you will find a directory called "opencontent". This directory holds the "OGLv1.0a.rtf" file (which details the license), and all of the game's open content. You are free to change or use the content in this directory. You can even hack the game by modifying these files - the spells, monsters, magic items and character classes are all defined in spreadsheets in this directory.

Developing OSCG has been my hobby for over ten years. Your feedback, especially constructive criticism, is most welcome. Please use the comment section below to ask questions, suggest improvements and request new features.

Just bought the game and have sunk many hours into it this first weekend! Would it be possible to move rolling ability scores to the first step of character creation instead of the final step? I find it strange to have to pick my class before I know if the roll qualifies. I'd *prefer* to play without cheesing rerolls, though that's what I've been doing so far, since the class is locked in.

Bugs: 1) You can buy and sell arrows to shops to make infinite money.
2) I've seen a dungeon with a disconnected room (via the reveal map debug command) that I wasn't able to complete. I could dig up the save if it would help.
3) You can't move diagonally with the keyboard on the dungeon map but the auto move feature and moue are able to.

Quality of life ideas: 1) Make escape take you back to the map from the F1 screen.
2) I had a Staff of the Forest in one game (RIP) and it would be awesome if the characters could (optionally?) automatically pass around the regeneration item(s)...See more

Alex, I have added some of the quality of life fixes from your list to the next release. Others, like passing around regeneration items, didn't make the cut. (If I add that one, I may as well just give the party regeneration - that is supposed to be a somewhat rare thing not every character has easy access too.)

Hi Neko. If you conquor the world and become emperor, you get an artifact as a prize. If you replay the game, you get a different artifact. There are currently four to win. This gives the game a finale, but you can keep trekking through dungeons to your heart's content. Congratulations on conquering the world! :)

Old School Computer Game Update 27: Laser Like Focus Of A Butterfly

For as long as I have worked on this game, I have struggled with a problem. I want the settlements to be places you can enter, walk around, talk to people, have adventures inside and so on. I also want to have a bit of mass combat, where you can lead armies and conquor the world one settlement at a time. The latter makes you a ruler, constructing new buildings, interacting with NPCs in a different way and so on. Early on in the game's development, prior to mass combat, I had towns you could enter and walk around. However, I found the combination of making the settlement maps dynamic (oh look, someone built a new church ... or flattened one with an earthquake) and making NPCs change their tone based on your status (are you a ruler, and if so, are you their ruler or their enemy?) to be far too much work. I retired the idea of entering settlements, and went forward with world-conquering mass combat. Finally, I have realized a...See more

I am getting an error when trying to run the jar version on Windows 10 pro:

"Error: A JNI error has occurred, please check your installation and try again"

The version I was running previously, I believe v24 with filename

oscg-202108-jar-with-dependencies.jar

still works correctly with the same Java setup.

The .msi file for the current version (v27) boots normally, I will report here if I encounter further bugs, but I would prefer the java version if you can fix it.

Thanks again for this amazing game...See more

Hi Neko.

It looks like your computer defaults to using Java 8 to run JAR files. I have started building OSCG with newer versions of Java, so that won't work. You can freely and legally download updated Java runtimes from these two sites. The first is an open-source option, the other is Oracle's. (There may be other legal sources for Java, but these are the two I know of.)

Hi Andrew,

Not sure what I have done, but "Move to location" has stopped working suddenly: It only moves me one step in the desired direction, whether I click with the mouse or press ctrl+M.

The bug (feature?) stays on after restarting the game.

It did work for a few sessions with the current version, so maybe I toggled some setting? Can't find anything in the F1 and O menus.

Sorry to bother you with multiple bug reports...

I have found one that makes the game freeze. It happens when I cast Heal on a certain character and when Heal is cast automatically at the start of a new day --- I assume on that same character but I cannot be sure, the pop-up that says who healed whom how never appears.

The bug is fixed by removing that character from the party and adding the character back in.

They should be there for most classes. Clerics and druids are not allowed to use edged weapons, and so do not get them, and neither do monks, whose empty-handed attacks are superior. Are you using the mystic kit with one of those three classes?

Hi! Just bought this, seems very cool so far. Did have a probably very dumb UI question that I wasn't able to find an answer to in the help file - when I search the square I am currently in, does that find traps in adjacent squares? If not, what is the procedure for finding traps?
Customer avatar
Andrew K January 01, 2022 1:04 am UTC
PUBLISHER
Hi Sam. Thanks for buying my game.

Thieves, monks and any other characters with trap-finding abilities automatically check for traps every time you encounter one in a new square, and if they detect a trap, they try to disarm it. If they either fail to detect or disarm the trap, then it goes off. They do not check adjacent squares.

To check farther away, look to psionics and spell casters; they have some spells that can detect and/or disarm nearby traps. Some of the effects have great range as they gain levels. You can also find trap detecting wands. I generally use these in rooms with numerous containers, especially coffins, and otherwise take my chances with the party thief.

I'd like to make trap-disarming a puzzle game in itself, but I have yet to think of a way to do this that won't be a nuisance, boring etc. Until then, the above is all I've got. I'm open to suggestions if you have any! :)

I hope this helps.

Old School Computer Game Update 26: User Experience Enhancements

Your existing saved games will not work with this update. Please be sure to load up your games and export your characters before installing this upgrade.

I have a funny twitch when playing this game - after every combat, I quickly check my party management screen to look for damaged or dead characters, ones ready to level up etc. What a waste of time and keystrokes! To fix this, I've added character portraits at the right side of the map screen. These indicate health, various states of deadness, and have a gold border if a PC is ready to level up. I hope this helps you as much as it does me.

Changes:
- auto-ready best item logic now treats returning thrown weapons as equivalent to missile weapons (e.g. will prioritize a dagger +1 returning over a mundane sling)
- changed dialog windows' art to have a simpler frame, does not look as obviosuly stretched/scaled
- some messages now appear...See more

Got something new- just how do you use Antidote? I had a couple in my inventory and had a party member get instant-killed by a Spitting Cobra. After the fight, I tried to Use the Antidote, and it informed me no party member was poisoned (I only had the one dead character that had died instantly from the cobra hit), even though the description specifically says it brings a poisoned character back from the dead. Does it have to be used during combat? Potions don't seem to be able to be applied to other people in combat and this was my first chance where I actually had Antidote on hand when somebody went down to poison.

So is there a reason it doesn't work from, say, the Dungeon Map like other potions do? Because it definitely didn't work that way. I resurrected the character in town so I no longer have the poisoned character to try it on, but if it happens again I will try what you describe. But I would suggest it should work the way any other used item works for simplicity's sake. When I use a Raise Dead scroll, I can do that from the map, I don't have to go into the View Character screen, this should work just like that since it is essentially the same effect.

Also here's something amusing- Charm persists past the death of the charmed character, too. Yeah, I just had my entire party charmed by a group of 3 of them and combat doesn't seem able to end. Harpies are way too over-powered to be appearing in Level 1 dungeons. What are you supposed to do as a counter-measure? One would probably be tough enough for my Level 2 party, but three, that's insane. My Level 7 party would have trouble with that. So does Silence prevent their Charm? I tried to use some Potions of Invisibility, but that made no difference, so I was never able to deploy a Silence effect as the Harpies went first.

I'll fix up the charm stuff in the next release.

I'm going to leave harpies and other hard monsters showing up ahead of schedule as it were, as I think this is a feature of classic gaming - not every encounter is created so that the party can beat it. Sometimes they have to run away and come back later, or not at all.
Customer avatar
Jeffrey G October 29, 2021 8:23 pm UTC
PURCHASER
It is hard to run away and come back, though, when they go first and you didn't know they were in there, or, worse, they appear as a random encounter on the world map! If they go first, they can charm most or all of the party instantly. I don't have an issue with hard monsters, but old school gaming also gives you clues so you can avoid encounters like this! Minimally I'd make them use the single-target Charm Person instead of Mass Charm. At least you can use some tactics in an encounter like that, like re-Charming any party members that get taken, and then casting Silence, then fighting the things. But a first round, first attack, the entire party is Charmed is kinda BS.

have played your game a bit across a few years and have enjoyed it ; bought a number of years ago. I have a number of other PC games and have got into the habit of modding games to make them how I want them. Is it possible to maybe make a Higher resolution of the Monster pngs so that users can substitute their own favourite pictures to use and make the game more fun? I have tried this already and it does work OK but the 32by32 png size is limiting when I add my own pictures ,the medium sized monsters at 64by64 are cool though-could you maybe double the size (or more) for monster pngs to enable this feature I would like. I am sure other users could get some fun out of it as well. A game similar to your game on Steam called Low Magic Age allows users to do what I have suggested, and this is what prompted me to experiment modding your game, which is great vanilla by the way. Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
