Grand Fleets Third Edition

ADD TO WISHLIST >

"We may now picture this great Fleet, with its flotillas and cruisers, steaming slowly out of Portland Harbour, squadron by squadron, scores of gigantic castles of steel wending their way across the misty, shining sea, like giants bowed in anxious thought. We may picture them again as darkness fell, eighteen miles of warships running at high speed and in absolute blackness through the narrow Straits, bearing with them into the broad waters of the North the safeguard of considerable affairs…

"The King's ships were at sea."

—Winston Churchill

Grand Fleets™ is a tabletop game of naval warfare during the age of the battleship. From the ironclads of the late 1800s to the floating fortresses of World War II, players can take command of the ships that altered the course of history.

In addition to the basic rules for surface actions between 1890 and 1950, Grand Fleets includes rules for using submarines and aircraft alongside your battlewagons. Advanced rules are also provided for things like RADAR, smoke screens, critical hits, fleet morale, night fighting, and destroyer flotillas.

All distances in Grand Fleets are given in thousands of yards (kyds), giving you the flexibility to adapt the tabletop scale to whatever size miniatures you have on hand. The rules are also written to accommodate hex-based play, if desired.

The rulebook contains 160 ship data cards representing over 50 different classes. Best of all, you'll never have to wait for official publication of your favorite ships: comprehensive, step by step guidelines are provided to generate game stats for any vessel that put to sea during the battleship era.

So, raise the battle ensign, sound general quarters, and damn the torpedoes—your destiny awaits!

If you were asked to come up with an 1890-1945 naval game from Starmada, you would end up with something like this.

If you are not familiar with Starmada, that translates as simple without being simplistic, with easy to use base rules on which detail can be added. Do you want to take account of small differences in speed? You can do it.

A few months ago, I was horrified at another set of naval rules here - so much was wrong, so much was missing. These are vastly better. If a ship you want isn't included, Wikipedia plus a calculator will get you the right figures for the game.

this was a huge disappointment. I am a big fan of kasts rulesets , but this is a waste. it did not live up to advertisements. here are things yous should not expect: ww2 ships other then a few ship for the scenarios given. support 0 support, carriers or any thing like that. mr kast thinks matapan is the way carrier battles were fought and unless you have extremely detailed information on guns and phd in math don't try to stat out a ship
this should be advertistised as a lazy version of starmada nova, and years 1890-1930. I want my money back. I truly expected better of mr kast

Does the game include stats for the US and Japanese forces that fought in the Guadalcanal battles?

No. Just the two ww2 scenario are River Plate, and Komandarski Islands.
Rumor on their website is that a US-Japanese Pacific module may come out.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
