Up Front Action Cards (2nd Edition)

Up Front Action Cards (2nd Edition)

Premium US Poker Card(s)

Up Front is a card-based wargame designed by Courtney F. Allen and orignally published by Avalon Hill in 1983.

This award winning game, referred to as the Squad Leader card game, provides an innovative game design for simulating squad level skirmishes. Its use of terrain cards in lieu of a board; its effective simulation of the Fog of War and of troop responsiveness (or lack thereof) to orders amid combat are all often cited innovative features. It is a non-CCG design.

Up Front is quite well known in wargame circles, but for those looking for more information and reviews of this game, we recommed these sites:

What Am I Getting?

The 162 card Action deck. These are standard poker-size cards printed on our premium playing card stock. The Action cards have the only layout element that was changed when we re-mastered these cards. The original teal text used on these cards did not reproduce clearly from the original card images, so we replaced it with darker blue text for crisper readability.

With permission from rights-holder Hasbro (owner of Wizards of the Coast and Avalon Hill), Wargame Vault has digitally re-mastered the second edition of Up Front and is offering it again through our card printing program. We've done our best to capture high-quality images of each card and the components reproduce nicely with minimal blurriness on text or images.

Each component of the game is listed here on Wargame Vault as a separate title to make it convenient for players who may wish to replace lost or worn-out components of a copy of Up Front they already own. For those who wish to get the entire game, we have bundled all of the components together into one bundle title for convenient purchase (and a bit of savings over buying each component separately).

Up Front Cards Original vs Redone

We are unable to provide a reproduction of the original game box, but all of the components store nicely in our stacking, plastic deckboxes. If you are buying complete game, then we recommend 3 large deckboxes and 1 standard deckbox to hold all of the cards and have room to spare for the cut-up counters.

See the short video below to get a full idea of how the game components come to you.

This seems like a good move on WotC's part. Though they may want to consider sales prices like the ones on their D&D products if they want them to actually move. Looking froward to more games such as Gammarauders or the Bloodwars card game if this continues. Things I can print and play, that maybe hard for me to acquire in Romania.

I just read a post by Rodger MacGowan on FB in the Fans of Avalon Hhill Wargames group where he expresses he still holds copyright to the Up a front logo and art work. How is this issue going to affect sales? After the Kickstarter fiasco over this title, I am now reluctant to order.

To the best of our knowledge, Wargame Vault and WotC have acquired all permissions necessary to produce this product.

Have the errata been incorporated into the Action deck and various counters?

Original electronic
Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
